Things like this really piss me off. Students think nothing of borrowing the money, but then vote for Bernie because he says they won’t have to pay it off. These Participation Trophy Snowflakes don’t want to assume responsibility for anything. It’s just like those companies that advertise you don’t have to pay your credit card debt or the IRS. What they’re really saying is that the rest of us who do pay our debts have to support you deadbeats who don’t. Grow up, Snowflake, move out of the basement (or jungle), and pay off what you owe.

This guy doubled down on stupid. From the article, “He then went back to school to pursue a master’s degree in comparative literature at the University of Colorado Boulder.” Comparative Literature? What???
My kid has about $25K in college debt and should have it paid off in under 2 years.
Good major, good job, lives cheap.
I told him today to get his own car insurance and he told me how would but it would take longer to pay me off.
I told him it would be about a wash since he pays me and I pay his insurance.
For now, he’s going to pay me what his portion costs.
Here’s a thought... try doing some cost/benefit analysis before burying yourself in debt for a degree that won’t get you a job.

I’m sure you raised him to be smarter than me with his life, but the list can’t hurt :)
If you major in humanities then make it one where you learn a language that may come in handy. My neighbor’s son went to UCLA where he majored in political science and minored in Arabic. He learned to speak, read and write Arabic fluently. When he graduated he went on and got an MBA and turned that to a lucrative business career that takes him from NYC to the Middle East on a frequent basis. His Arabic language skills helped him land a six figure salary. I would never encourage my kids to study social sciences unless they were willing to double major with a science or computer science major, but if they wanted to study history, philosophy or political science I’ll insist they learn one or more foreign languages to make them more employable.

30 plus years ago, I drove our oldest son age 18 to a parent/student day at a California State College,
Every professor and asst dean tried to hammer into our heads that it was impossible to get a simple 120 hour degree in 4 years. It really took 5-6 years or longer.
On the way home, I was driving and he was thinking about the coeds and beer parties on mom and dad for 5-6 years. I would hold 4 fingers and ask him how many fingers I had up.
The first couple of times, he would grin and say "4"..
On the third time, he asked what I was telling him.
I said the answer simple. "We would pay for 4 years of college, and anything afterwards would be on his dimes."
Then, I dropped the Non Negotiable bomb on him and said that it was not Negotiable.
He ended up with a double engineering degree and a lot of business accounting hours. We ended up paying for 5.5 years, as he had about 150 hours when he was graduated and zero bs courses.
His son will be heading to college next year, and he has gotten the same 4 finger exercise unless he becomes an engineer. Then, they will negotiate some extra paid time.
Student loans should not be guaranteed by the government.
Student loans should be like all other debt and can be discharged by bankruptcy.
Neither the loan company nor the university have any skin in the game. They don’t care if the degree is worthless or not. They will get their money one way or another.
Take away the government gurantee and they will become a lot more selective in who they loan money to.

All colleges and universities should be required to have a first year class on degrees and occupations. The class would outline possible occupations for each degree, along with expected incomes. The class should be required for first year students.

I’m sorry, did someone force this leech to major in philosophy? Did he not check the job prospects before he chose his major? And good luck to him in the jungle. India extradites felons.
You must respect your plumbers as you would philosophers because ultimately, neither theories nor pipes hold water.
