As Jordan Peterson often points out, a significant portion of our population (at least 10%) have IQs so low that they really cannot perform any useful work.

Now, there are people a step or two above that. People with low skills, but some ability. They can do various menial tasks — cashier, burger flipper, truck driver, etc.

But machines are taking those jobs away.

NOTE: Machines are also impacting high-skill jobs like lawyers and financial services.

Society is going to have, I think, at least 40% of the population who cannot contribute. The 40% number is probably right around the corner, and the number will only go up over time.

I have no idea what we’re going to do with those people. All they can make is trouble.

I routinely shop at a store with a bagger who clearly has limited intellectual capacity. But he does a decent job of putting groceries in bags. If he was replaced by some stupid tech device he would have no job, no prospects of finding one. He would be on relief, and for the rest of his life live in grinding poverty.

That’s the progressives’ view of hope and change.

Can you can have a really low IQ and be a truck driver? They usually have to drive, deliver something and then keep the paperwork on it as well.

I brought up a solution to a mixed group and made a lot of people mad.
I said that there are jobs that can’t be outsourced or automated. We hire legal and illegal immigrants to do them. If you want to improve employment rates for native born Americans, close the border and deport the illegal immigrants until labor supply matches demand. If the unemployment rate remains too high, start offering incentives to legal immigrants to go home.
That we DO have a way to adapt if we are willing to prioritize taking care of our own poor first.

In all of my years, I have simply never been able to master the art of cooking an egg the way I like to eat them. I certainly am as well inept at flipping a burger to my own satisfaction.

I have driven many trucks many miles, and that is mostly easy, except for when it isn’t. I broke down a few times and trust me, no computer is going to fix a bunch of blowouts, or a broken linkage as I have had to do, with a wire hanger.

Massive potholes, powerful storms, whiteouts, accidents ahead, or just aggressively bad drivers all around me.

Truck driving is not mindless, by any means.

Yup. The Silicon Valley Wizards of Smart will be scratching their heads and wondering "How did this happen?" when these folks rise-up and they find themselves living in a Socialist county with wealth confiscation.
