The City Council on Wednesday approved legislation that will allow New Yorkers to select a third gender category on their birth certificates.
The change, which has the backing of Mayor de Blasio, ensures a new “non-binary” identity category known as “X” will be available on birth certificates for those who don’t consider their gender to be male or female.

Cities don’t issue birth certificates, do they?
Not a lawyer but I suspect they are exceeding the authority of a City Council. At minimum it is the State that regulates birth certificates (and ultimately the Federal Government)
Try getting a passport with out gender being clear.
I will predict that at some point in time when sanity prevails we will go back to there only being two genders

Another issue, but I can not believe the names kids are given today.
Names pronounced one way but spelled another. Or names that you can not determine if male or female by name alone. Or names the average person would not be able to say without first hearing it.
A life of frustration is in store.
Negating biological fact? This is not simplfied, this is not truth. Genetics is based on DNA. This is legislating a lie.
I really don’t think this is a good idea. Many countries don’t buy this stuff. If you show up with a passport marked “gender x”, if that is even possible with the new chip embedded passports, you could well have problems.

A lot of people thought they wanted a society in which your genitals and what you do with them are the only really important thing. Oops. We may charitably assume that the average casual fornicator didn’t realize how many absolute looney toons would come out of the woodwork in his free-love utopia ... but there you are.
It would be really amusing, if it weren’t so destructive of the lives of the most vulnerable, particularly children.

It would be easier to change it to say “biological gender”. Or if that’s too confusing for some parents have a checkbox (or Y/N) for “penis”. It solves every problem except for people whose goal is to “cause problems” rather than have “accurate” birth certificates. It also works for bathrooms, locker rooms and other places people want to create new genders and differentiate on the new gender.
You can argue all sorts of things about chromosomes or how the baby “may feel” in 20 years. But you can’t argue whether or not the doctor detects a penis. And that won’t change no matter how much the parents confuse the poor kid. Even if the parents think a kid can have a penis AND be a girl (or vice-versa) the fact exists that the penis is or is not detectable at birth.
So, I guess the kid will never enter the military nor get a passport.
