Variety ^ | 9/7/18 | Pat Saperstein

Bill Daily, the affable TV actor who starred as Major Roger Healey in “I Dream of Jeannie” as well as on “The Bob Newhart Show,” died Sept. 4 in Santa Fe, N.M., his son J. Patrick Daily confirmed. He was 91.

“He loved every sunset, he loved every meal — he just decided to be happy about everything,” said his son.

The longtime Albuquerque resident was a staple on series of the 1960s through 1980s, notably as Bob Newhart’s daffy neighbor, airline pilot Howard Borden, on CBS’ “The Bob Newhart Show” sitcom from 1972 to 1978. In the 1980s, he appeared as psychiatrist Dr. Larry Dykstra on NBC’s “ALF.”

I knew Bill. He was exactly the same in real life as he was in his TV roles. A very funny man indeed.

I’m sure he was a fine man (at least by Hollywood standards) and he lived a long life with a solid career. I just never thought he was funny.

I also resented the fact that Bob Newhart’s characters needed two or three morons to play off of when most comedians were able to get by with just one. Newhart’s wives were the only sane people in his shows and 30 minutes in his world made me grieve for humanity.

Still, I realize Daily was merely playing a character and was different in real life.

“He loved every sunset, he loved every meal — he just decided to be happy about everything,” said his son.

Good for him. A fine way to live and an admirable epitaph.

I always liked him and I like him even more now knowing that.

I have been watching the Bob Newhart show on Decades TV for the past several weeks and wanted to know a little about him, so I just looked up his biography yesterday. I’m getting goosebumps.

From Bob Newhart on Twitter:

“Bill Daily and I go back to the late 1950’s in Chicago when we were both trying to get into stand up. Of course, later he joined The Bob Newhart Show. I called him our bullpen guy. Whenever we were having trouble with a script on the show, we’d have Bill make an appearance. You could always go to him. He was one of the most positive people I’ve ever known and we will miss him dearly”

Oh, yeah. Well, just wait until Norm MacDonald croaks. That's another "comedian" I've never once laughed at. In fact, I've laughed more at Burt Reynolds than either of them and he's not even technically a comedian.

Takes all types to make a world. Time to grow up and make allowances for that.
