INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR)It was a frustrating evening for passengers of flight 3708 when a woman on board refused to check a suitcase that was too large for carry-on regulations.
Crew members of the flight, which were headed from Indianapolis to Newark, asked the woman to check her bag, but she refused. (snip) the passenger became verbally abusive toward the crew. She was then asked to leave the aircraft, which she also refused to do.
All passengers were asked to deplane while the crew waited for this one woman to disembark.
The flight was delayed multiple times because of the incident. It was originally scheduled to leave at 7:05 p.m. but didn't take off until 12:17 a.m. A different aircraft was used to get all other passengers to their destination.
King and United Airlines sent this statement to WTHR:
"A customer on United Express flight 3708 from Indianapolis to Newark was asked to check her oversized bag, and she refused to do so. She became verbally abusive to the crew and they asked her to leave the aircraft. The customer refused and all customers were asked to deplane. To minimize the inconvenience to our customers, we arranged for a different aircraft to make the flight from Indianapolis to Newark as soon as possible last night."
Jason Kowalsky, a passenger on the flight, said the entire situation was "frustrating." Kowalsky said he and other passengers sat in the terminal for more than 4 hours with little information and no food or drink options because food vendors were closed by that time.
Kowalsky said, "They could have handled it much better. The fact that one person can hold us hostage is outrageous."
He also said a passenger suffered a medical condition while passengers waited in the terminal.
Kowalsky shared this video with WTHR:

Someone apparently felt they were being disrespected, so everyone had to suffer.
Can’t imagine why it would take 4 hours to resolve this situation.
She should have been forcibly removed from the plane.
The tyranny of the few continues.
The idiot should have been dragged off the plane and thrown in jail but the airlines have been so beat up by morons like this that they have become very cautious. I have to wonder if this person was some kind of protected minority.
THIS is when they should drag them off the plane....
Sometimes an ass whipping seems in order.
“She should have been forcibly removed from the plane.”
Come to think of it, the last few incidents (that we’ve been allowed to READ??) where people have been forcibly removed from airlines all involved male passengers.
Cant imagine why it would take 4 hours to resolve this situation.
She should have been forcibly removed from the plane.
...
Then the media and a good number of FReepers would trash the airline for doing so.
ENTITLED?
Why didn't they just drag her off like they did the asian guy last year?
Probably an oppressed minority looking for her ticket to riches
Don’t airport check ins have those holes you’re supposed to be able to get your bag through to see if it’ll fit. That is for folks unwise enough not to check first. Why was she even allowed to board with a bag too big to fit in the overhead?
Was it someone playing the “offended minority” lottery?
I watch this video, and I remember a year or two ago watching a guy literally dragged off that flight.
They are learning some of this as they go.
Inconvenient, but not terribly so.
To me anyway...
Probably a heavyset black women no doubt. Rules are for white people. Maybe the 4th waitress stabber on the run.
United maybe going overboard the other way to avoid another incident with ejecting a passenger. In this case I think the other passengers would have all applauded after all the entreties of the crew, to get the oversize back checked, were exhausted.
My one question is with the crew at the gate. If they were REALLY doing their job, the oversize back would have been rejected before the woman boarded the plane. If the managers realized that somtime during the ruckus, I imagine someone on the gate crew got called on it.
No one wants to be called a racist!
They should be thtreatened with their name being added to a National No Fly List. Flying is a privilege not a right.
“Why was she even allowed to board with a bag too big to fit in the overhead?”
My first thought, too!
Good idea !
Why was she not arrested and charged with interfering with a flight crew?.........................Protected................
