Based on his long political history and statements he had made years ago, in interviews and in books. Some of his opponents used those statements in the primary campaign.
I heard that interview, and that is not what happened.

People change their minds for all sorts of reasons. If he’s supporting Trump now, that’s one more media type who’s not trying to destroy him. Maybe he’ll drag some of his fans with him. Votes is votes.

Buck Sexton filling in on Rush a month or so before the general election had his “former NSA analyst friend” on again for 15 minutes to say that Trump was owned by the Russians and from what he’d seen, Trump was in deep doo-doo and the US would be screwed under a Trump Administration.
