I was just finishing my Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering degree at U of F and was working in a research laboratory in the EE department near the bandshell. Just walked across to the concert, but have never spotted myself in the video. Was in the first few rows in the front, right of the stage.
I saw the Allman Brothers Band in 71 shortly before Dwayne was killed. He was so obviously the leader and the most talented in that band they were just never the same to me after he was gone.
And Greg Allman wrote his first song “Melissa” after Dwayne got killed in the traffic accident. Melissa was what he called his guitar.
I saw them at the SMU McFarlin Auditorium. I was in a band with a several other guys and somehow we got front row seats through a mutual friend. I left that concert thinking I’ll never play that good I might as well quit now”! he was something else. Completely on his own level of greatness.
Dicky Betts was the real center of the band back then.
This was filmed when MTV thought they would be a concert clip show. It never turned out that way.
And Dickey Betts was a very versatile and good guitar player, but when Dwayne was alive he was calling all the shots and Dicky stood to the side and played Rhythm, sang and an occasional lead. I love music and I lived in Southern California from 65 through 69 and I saw as many bands as I possibly could and when I came back to Texas I did the same. I saw all the great guitar players Duane Allman was in a league of his own he was the best guitar player I ever saw live.
I never saw Duane live. I did see Lynyrd Skynyrd live five times. The last time was the Lakeland, FL concert which was the second concert before the plane crash.
I just realized I want to say I’m not trying to rain on your parade the Allman Brothers are great even after Dwayne was gone it’s just the way I felt about the bed but I appreciate the work you gone to thank you
I never saw them with Dwayne and I know many feel the same as you. I need to pull up youtube videos if they exist to understand. I only saw the band with Greg and the first was this video in 1982, only a few months before I graduated from U of F.
In the song “Melissa” The name Melissa was Dwayne’s Guitar and the Gypsy was his name for his motorcycle
This is a very, very tight band.
Thanks for posting it.
Dwayne was a once-in-a-lifetime musician, like I said I’ve seen all the great guitar players and he was the best. And to see Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on the same stage the question didn’t even exist Dwayne was the heart and soul of the Allman Brothers. All the early hard driving solos on the early Allman Brothers albums were from Duane, there are a lot of video on him on YouTube.
great American music
Thank You for posting
Another guy to watch. I went to one of his concerts and he sang only like 4 songs in 2.5 hours. But, the talking was so funny I was thoroughly entertained.

Very cool. It is always fun to watch the magicians go through their paces. I love watching guitarists work the fretboards on popular songs. It like watching a master chef prepare his recipe.
How far we have slid since then.
