However, if you asked a Canadian what their idea of a budget AR-15 brand is, you would likely get one answer. Norinco.
China’s Norinco has been cloning and selling American designs on the international market for decades. In the United States, the company is banned because it tried to sell guns directly to gangs in the 1990s.
Regardless, here are some of the most popular American guns Norinco makes clones of.

I had a Polytech M14S (Chicom M1A) once. The receiver was considered superior to American manufacturers (forged, I think) but the bolt’s were ridiculously soft. Fulton Armory made a good business turning them into match-grade rifles.
The Pardner shotguns mimick the Remington 870. I bought one for a little over $200. You can’t beat that. The issue is consistent quality. I had to file down a couple parts to get it to load correctly. It now works great and I saved a boat load of money.
They probably bought, or were given, the prototypes from us. We have no idea how much money the Clintons owed them. Bill gave them MRV, why not other weapons based items?

The SKS made by Norinco was not, strictly speaking, a clone - it was (for a little while) the standard arm of the Red Chinese Army, and the Soviets (who invented it) gave them the design (and even helped them build it initially, including with Soviet parts). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKS#Chinese

Let other countries/people go through the cost of R+D, proof of concept, field trials and building the name/brand.
They clone it and reduce their bottom line by hundreds of millions.
They have done it with everything from watches to cars to firearms.
The same was true for Japan for a few years. Just a few years...
I have a Chinese copy of the Winchester M1887 lever action shotgun. It is a truly great piece!
I wish they would clone the Mauser M1896 Broom handle.
Especially in the .45cal.
Chinese made pirated copies of the Broomhandle in .45 so the ammo would be compatible with M1911s, and Thompsons.
I would love to own a copy of that in modern materials, but I would settle for the 9mm version.
Or to got further, what western technology have they not cloned?

Copying, reverse enginneering, patent violations, copyright violations, counterfitting, etc., etc. , etc., all that’s known as leading edge research in China.
They won’t to that forever.

I remember when the Winchester 1897 clones started showing up at Cowboy Action Shooting. They had nothing but problems. By getting them reworked by competent gunsmiths, they became as reliable as 100 year old Winchesters. In recent years, there seems to be more of them and there are less problems. I wonder if Norico corrected their problems or if they are going through a remanufacturer before being sold to CAS people, now.
I also heard that the M14/M1A1 clones had soft parts, too. Again, they could be fixed by competent gunsmiths, but the cost was such that they could have gotten a first class American made one by the time they were rebuilt.
They also made a copy of the Browning .22 Semi-Auto one upon a time. I had one that I bought really cheap, that had soft parts and malfunctioned a lot. I have since replaced it with a genuine Browning and have not had a bit of trouble. It is going to my granddaughter when she gets old enough.
In all cases, it looks like if you accept soft critical parts, you can buy for half price of the original. Not for me.
