One of the techniques used to determine the most accurate blood-alcohol levels in a dead body is to extract the fluid from the eye of the deceased; subsequently, the eye is then refilled with saline solution.

They should have warmed his finger up. It would have worked.

Jack Bauer did it in season 1. He took out his leatherman and clipped the thumb right off a perp.

What about the electrical charge carried by a live body?

I very much doubt this equipment is designed to detect electrical charge. My understanding of the technology is that it uses a form of image sensing and looks at the fingerprint pattern. Responsibility2nd's point about a pulse being required is within the capability of an image sensor, so I believe that requirement is plausible, and indeed, an obviously good idea to prevent people from faking it.

Phillip was shot and killed March 23 at a Wawa gas station after police said he tried to drive away when an officer was about to search him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did they have a warrant or probable cause?
They can’t just shoot you for refusing a search.
The one on my iPad only works about half the time.
See - this is what I was thinking about the Sutherland Springs killer.
They could have tried to hook the dead bastard up to a heart lung machine. And artificially created a pulse and blood flow.
But even then - with all the morally and legally questionable obstacles - I doubt that it would work.
His trying to drive away was the reason for the shooting.
A cop can be 30 feet BEHIND a fleeing car. But that still constitutes deadly force resistance.
So the laws allow the cops to open fire.
per article: ""I just felt so disrespected and violated," said Victoria Armstrong, "
When I read that line, I immediately knew. No need to look at the picture at that point, but here it is nonetheless:
Missing from the story is exactly what the guy did to cause him to shot and killed as he was about to be searched.
If the perp had just shot and killed someone and was driving away, then I get it.
If he was asked to take a beathalyzer test or was going to be search because he had wildwood weed on his breath, then different story.
Bingo, it requires a live person who has a bit of charge going to the phone. Dead fingers won’t cut it. It’s why you can’t use a piece of wood or metal to write on the phone, you have to use a special utensil that transfers that charge or whatever. Chi?
Idiots...sick idiots. The police state simply cannot grasp the idea of some information beyond their reach.
Dead eyes don’t work on retina scans.
“The probably should have warmed the finger up to human body temperature. I can’t think of any other reason why it would not have worked. “
Electricity, bloodflow, etc... a dead finger won’t work. Swordmaker had a good explanation of it and has better details.
Grisly as it sounds, good biometric authentication devices contain checks to confirm that they body part is still attached to a living individual.
Retina scanners flash a light to ensure the pupils dilate.
Finger print scanners check that a pulse is present.
From Apple.
To start using Touch ID, you must first set up a passcode on your iPhone or iPad (or a password on your Mac). You must enter your passcode or password for additional security validation:
after you restart your iPhone, iPad, or Mac;
when more than 48 hours have passed from the last time you unlocked your device;
