Having Big Genitals Can Spell Evolutionary Disaster, Say Paleobiologists

The study, authored by scientists at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, shows that the size and shape of at least one species’ genitals has spelled out disaster for longevity. Their analysis of the fossils of ostracods — tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans that are still around today — indicated that individuals with larger and more elongated sex organs had “estimated extinction rates that were ten times higher than those of the same species with the lowest investment.”

“Investment” here refers to genitalia — namely, the amount of energy any species invests into growing bigger sex organs. The idea in this paper is that the energy that older ancestors of ostracods spent on having large sex organs left them unable to develop traits that would have left them better equipped for survival, albeit with smaller dicks.

“We showed that when males are larger and more elongated than the females, those species tend to not last as long in the fossil record,” explained co-author and paleobiologist Gene Hunt, Ph.D. in a statement released Wednesday. “They have a higher risk of extinction.”

Awesome thread, Ben. Has potential to become legendary, as long as we don't let it get out of hand.

Wait, let me rephrase that...

Yeah, I always wanted to base the evolutionary fitness of my genitalia on a shrimp. Nerds trying to get lucky. Ignore them.

#57 To Louis Fisk, re “I hate when I’m out with a gal and find out she’s better endowed than me.

Sorry to break this to you Louie, but that’s no “gal” no matter what he’s wearing.

I believe a large scrotal sac might create such resistance as to impede the transmigration of the goose. However, as geese often fly at altitudes as high as 30,000 feet, I find this explanation insufficient. As it is so cold at those altitudes would cause the sac to constrict and place the testicles along-side their tonsils. Thus the good Lord created the cloaca and the 'not-so-gentle cloacal kiss.

If you have ever watched a rooster top a hen it seems brutal and often unrelenting. It might rival the king of the jungle, the magnificent lion who breeds the female up to 200 times per day and this goes on for up to 3 days. As you might know, the lion is not endowed with a large member. The galopogous tortus has a 5 inch thick member.

Lest you come to think I spend too much time studying the male members of different species, know this. I had to learn this crap when I was taking a comparative vertebrate anatomy course.

Was the professor a 35-40 year old single woman by any chance?
