Robbery Prevention on my Street (Dogs or Alarm Systems)

Posted on 03/29/2018 4:05:23 PM PDT by RoosterRedux

I live in a small but growing town in the South (South Georgia to be precise). Nice street.

But on this street...a prominent local doctor was robbed and other good people.

We have a crime problem lately.

Three houses on my street have been robbed lately.

I was thinking of an alarm system, but they are so slow they seldom matter. After an alarm is set off, they call the house to inquire if it was false alarm or a fire, and then they call 911.

I have thought of smarter technology that would call me on my smart phone upon a breach so I could call 911...but lately I have thought about dogs.

Thinking of German Shepherds to be precise.

I have a nicely and tightly fenced in back yard...

Wouldn't they have a much better effect at preventing entry by burglars?

As an aside, I love animals. I have a couple of cats...and possums and coons come up at night to finish off the left over cat food.

I love dogs too but worry that if I die...what will happen to them.

Well, there it is...

ADOPTABLE

Releashed Rescue Foster Dog Jethro showed up on our property on July 5th and was not able to defecate. We took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with anal hernias possibly caused by not being neutered. We neutered him and repaired the hernias and he is good as new! We even cleaned his teeth. Jethro refuses to bay at adoptions but when he sees an intruder, it is a beautiful sound! Jethro loves to snuggle and is around 10 but in great shape for an old man!

How about placing “Proud Member of the NRA” and “Good Guys with Guns Save Lives” stickers on the front and back doors of your house? ,

rotties or dobies. Burglers are most afraid of black dogs.

Sometimes it’s enough to make them look for an easier target.

German Shepherds are great dogs but require a lot of poop to be cleaned up on a daily basis.

Land mines are quick and efficient and only require one clean up. The message gets out real fast.........

As a post script, if you’re thinking about dogs, the only dogs worth owning are those who can rip the throat out of a home invader..........

It’s burglary. Houses get burglarized; people get robbed. You can’t rob a house.

My daughter has lived alone next to a bad neighborhood for many years. She has four foot chain link fence surrounding the house and she has dogs. Years ago when she got her first adorable puppy it turned into a 95 lb pit bull mix but she raised it and she is incapable of raising something other than a sweet doggy, or so I thought. One could say BOO to Alex and he would run under the house and whimper.

Daughter was looking through the window at a suspicious looking fellow walking on the sidewalk one evening. He stopped and Alex was wagging his tail. The guy made a loud noise and Alex scampered under the house. The man gently pushed up the latch on the gate. Then he pushed it open slowly. Alex came bounding out from under the house snarling and dripping saliva. The would be trespasser closed the gate and went about his business elsewhere. Last year, daughter came home from work and found a bloody piece of denim in the side yard. The next-door said her dogs had made a lot of noise that night (she works at night). There was no more about it from any source.

Two or three vicious sounding dogs should do it.

“It’s burglary. Houses get burglarized; people get robbed. You can’t rob a house.”

Thank you for exposing my ignorance :), and teaching me something.

Yes, that is a key distinction. I overlooked that people leave their homes. I’ve worked from home for 15 yrs. so I’m a little out of touch.

I use cameras on motion alarms and a shotgun loaded with spreader load bird shot in the first shell, then three lethal buck shot loads if the bird shot didn’t make my point sufficiently.

IMHO two big dogs are more than twice as good as one big dog.

Much harder to attack two dogs than one and much more liable to get bitten in the process. Plus they keep each other company when you are gone.

Please see if there is a German shepherd rescue in your area. Also do not send the dog for security training, German shepherds have a protective instinct that you will not believe.

I’ve had an alarm service, cameras and dogs for the last 20 years.

I think those little signs the alarm company give you (THIS PROPERTY IS ADT PROTECTED, etc.) do just as much good as anything else. Never been broken into yet, knock on wood. But our neighborhood is going downhill, so I don’t know how much longer that will last. With any luck, we’re moving next year.

If I had it to do over, or if we had had more money, I would’ve gotten better cameras that covered every inch of the home’s exterior. You’ll need several interior monitors so you can get to one quickly should you need to see what’s going on outside. And, of course, you always need to be within reach of a loaded weapon.

Dogs have to be trained. Can’t expect a mutt you picked up at the pound to reliably provide much in the way of security/guard duty. I’ve owned German Shepherds. Absolutely love them. But we Americans have bred them to be more sweet and puppy-like than the original GS. That’s why police and military nowadays often prefer the Belgian Malinois. We own one of those right now, too. Got her at the pound. She’s afraid of her own shadow. Guns, thunder, strangers? Fuhgeddaboudit. She wouldn’t bark at all for the first five years we owned her, no matter what. Good thing we weren’t expecting anything of her. Just got her for a companion dog. And she looked so forlorn at the pound.

Dogs have to be trained and, imo, bred from a long line of good working dogs (so that they will be intelligent, take to training, and not be fearful; i.e., have the right disposition, which can only come from careful breeding) if you are expecting much in the way of a guard/protection dog.

Another thing you can do, which the police always recommend: Keep the exterior of your house well-lit and free of shrubbery.

Can’t think of anything else right now. Good luck!
