I remember reading years ago somewhere in some obscure history book, that Kentucky, back during the civil war—around 1862 or so—not only experiencing pretty big battles and chaos, but to add to the misery, at least one killing frost during during the spring and summer growing months. Making produce difficult to harvest. Much less having any production at all.

Wonder if this related to a similar sun cycle (assuming this book was correct)?

The world was beginning to come out of the Maunder Minimum, and the Little Ice Age, during the Civil War period. I think the coldest years were the 1840 - 1855 period.

Just to keep you all in the information loop for springtime seed selection and crop planning .
If you believe in global cooling, you might want to get seed for more tolerant conditions,
or plan on selecting crops which don't require as much time until maturity or productivity.
Hybrids are grown for productivity and for market; Heirlooms are grown for consistency and proven viability in various adverse conditions.
Many of us have already diversified crops, and many have already sown seed indoors for spring transplanting.
This is just an alert to keep you informed in your planning and planting future.

If you think a solar minimum is going to happen it would be wise to plant trees that would survive at least one zone colder.

You can also stock garden seed for one zone colder but since your garden is a yearly thing you don't have to do as much preplanning.

Your trees will be in the ground for at least two years, if you are planting saplings, before you see any results. Five is more realistic. Nut and fruit trees with a fish pond (don't forget the cattails and wild rice) is the easiest and quietest way to have food.

Some years back I ran a thread hereabouts where I was tracking the sun’s weather this way.

I was calling the new minimum the Gore-Hansen Minimum.

It seemed suitable somehow.

Early May 2017. The fruit trees were in full bloom. Plums. Apples. Peaches. May 18th...+24F...killing frost. No fruit at all. The prior year had been exceptionally productive with apples, plums and grapes.

Have some Chicago Fig trees in the basement to protect them. Will plant in June. The cherry trees planted 2 years ago are rated to -40F. December 2016 saw -27F in my backyard.

It was one more defeat in our long and losing battle to keep the Sun perfect, or, if not perfect, constant, and if inconstant, regular. Why we think the Sun should be any of these when other stars are not is more a question for social than for physical science.
