When that much water permeates a floor/ceiling, that whole apartment would've gone crashing down through the cinema.

>>I hate this emerging recurring theme of “rejecting gay mans advances” makes you a racist homophobe bigot. I guarantee the first gay person who makes ‘advances’ on me will never try it again.

When a woman is sexual propositioned (or even simply approached for her phone number, complimented, etc) it is a “MeToo” moment.

But a man makes a sexual remark at work or in the restroom towards another man and you are just supposed to brush it off or as they say “take it as a compliment”.

The song and dance scene reminded me of Young Frankenstein.

It did to me as well, but the context was all wrong. Comedy one thing, Drama is another, and you can mix them a bit, but the movie has to be true to one or the other to be good.

I saw a movie once that was a comedy, and I thought the first half of the movie was hilarious...one of the funniest movies I had seen in a while...I thought it would be a classic. But not only did they go full drama the second half, it was sad and depressing drama.

Boy, did that piss me off. They had something, and then they changed it in mid-stream. Grrrr.....

I was hoping Darkest Hour would be named best picture. Although it takes too much dramatic license with the actual historical events and contains some anachronisms, it is a great story with no sex scenes, nude scenes or profanity. And it even features a cat.

Well, there’s the problem -— no nudity, profanity, or sex scenes! Ok, there WAS a cat in it, but nobody had sex with the cat, so...

Since the green motif is so present (and artificial) and the song and dance is obviously a dream/fantasy sequence and other elements (like flooding the bathroom quickly via the sink and tub - heck it takes awhile for a tub or sink to even fill up) are obviously beyond reality in an already unreal romance, I have to take the whole thing as a dream or fantasy in her mind.

She never did recover her voice, even with his magic touch. Did she escape to live happily ever after or was that in her final thoughts as she bled out and he took her into her watery grave?

Also the mousiness of it all, the green, and the French music reminded me in part of Amelie. That film is perceived to be a “chick flick” because the protaganist is female but in the commentary, the director (Jean-Pierre Jeunet) says those are things from his persona and childhood.

Similar (altered) color palette, similar flights of fantasy in the lead character’s mind. In another world they’d appear to be sisters or at least related (similar hairstyles even).

How about musical comedy horror (from a prolific action film director from Japan)?

I actually liked “Amalie”. Not into the whole “French thing”, but I found that film interesting.

I particularly liked the part where she sat on the roof eating her lunch, listening to the soccer game on the radio, and just as the guy’s team would close in to the goal, she would unplug his antenna, and you could hear the howl of frustration from several floors down!

I thought “Wow, that is a GREAT idea if you have have a rabid sports fan you want to get even with!”

Amalie is a much better movie than The Shape of Water which is trite and cardboard in its characterizations.

You can identify the villain in TSOW but you cannot identify WITH the villain(s) in TSOW.

And if the government was really looking at a hybrid humanoid lifeform to “catch up” with the then superior Soviet space program, don’t you think they’d do a bit more investigating to see if this adaptive and rejuvenative lifeform was even OF this Earth? If it was an alien species, it may have already had this whole space travel thing solved. Seems a bit short sighted to go slice it open to see how its guts work since we cannot transform the human body the same way.

Can you even slice him open? He healed bullet wounds. Apparently the bleeding he suffered from the taunting abuse by the government official was superficial because those wounds soon healed as well.

You’d think that some of these properties would’ve been documented or investigated in short order.

How old is it even? Those tribal legends by people who worshiped it, are they recent or centuries old? Is there just one?

Screen Junkies referred to it as the fish banging movie. And by distilling it down to a romance with less plot than the original Beauty and the Beast, the filmmaker did it a disservice.

And I brought “the French thing” because I could find no other reason for its recurrence throughout Shape of Water.

It was window dressing trying to seem like “art”.

Seriously, this film was way over-rated. But the trailers at least looked interesting.
