SAVANNAH, GA (Nexstar) — Actor Will Smith showed no fear when he squashed a giant cockroach in “Men in Black,” but he may have just met his match in the insect realm.

Sand gnats.

Smith is currently filming his new movie “Gemini Man” near Savannah, Georgia. He says he’s being swarmed not by his loving fans, but by tons of blood-thirsty sand gnats.

Smith posted a video on his Facebook page Tuesday saying, “I love Georgia but y’all gotta do something about these bugs… I’m just saying y’all need to fix it.”

In case you’re already asking why Smith hasn’t tried bug spray, he says he has, but “the bugs is on that like it’s honey.”

Sand gnats, also known as sand flies or no-see-ums, are blood-sucking insects that live in sandy and moist areas. They are tiny and almost translucent making it difficult to know they’re on your skin, but they leave behind giant red spots after feeding which can itch for several minutes without treatment.

“Gemini Man” is directed by Academy Award winner Ang Lee and also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Clive Owen (Children of Men).

Roosevelt Roads PR had these gnats that left scars. One landed on my arm and I inspected while it munched. It made an incision and slurped from body fluids from the trough.
The Seabees wore fatigue shorts for the heat and had permanent scarring on their legs.

Those “gnats” were Ghastly creatures.

Well, according to Liberal Logic(?) all we need to do is ban and confiscate them.

Not a one in Atlanta. Maybe my plan to move somewhere near the coast is a bad one.

Isn't there some DDT

The safest insecticide of the last century was outlawed because Rachel Carson thought it made eagle eggs soft and killed baby eagles. The fact that banning DDT caused more deaths from malaria than Nukes in Japan is excused because, Eagles!

Yes, but that would be cruel to the critters, many of which might be scarred for life.

Will Smith is filming some of this movie in our home. We live on a sailboat that will be in the marina scenes. We have netting around the cockpit and in all the ports, but, it just slows them down for the most part, doesn’t stop them.

The bugs have been bad this spring, but, nothing to intolerable for the locals. We have been using Deep Woods OFF. It works and isn’t too nasty.

As for what to do about them. You can’t spray for them, because, unlike Mosquitoes, the stuff that kills them also kill Shrimp. You don’t mess with Shrimp in Coastal Georgia.

You can only kill them. The best way was found by some scientist at a local Oxygen bottling plant (now closed).

You get a bucket of water, buffalo sweat (or a chemical that smells like it), and minteral water. Combine it together and put some cheese cloth over it.

Gnats can’t resist it and they will die by the millions in the bucket. Eventually, you can denude the area of the bugs, but, they will still move in from other areas eventually.

I don’t disagree with him. Bugs are in my top-ten list of why I choose not to live in the south...

Yep. I'd never seen real cockroaches until I moved to Florida. Suckers are huge and I have no idea how they get inside. They leave roach shit everywhere and they stink!

The only bug trade-off are the wasps. In Colorado, yellow jackets were aggressive and fast. Chased me all over the place. Here we have these mud daubers and orange-striped wasps that are slow and docile. I don't even bother spraying their nests anymore when I find them.

I don’t know those bugs but lemon verbena essential oil in water sprayed on your exposed skin keeps mosquitos off. They hate the smell but the smell is really good! And for a whole evening outside you can mix it into coconut oil for longer effect on the skin.
