I agree, they would have used that against him to get him to vote the way they wanted in the past. What sounds most logical is that was the cover story to keep the family quiet afterwards like has been pointed out by others.
Even Sucky Schumer admitted, the intelligence apparatus in this country has many ways to get you. I imagine that applies both live and for surviving family.

I heard a report several months back - they have the technology to plant most anything they want on your computer, in your house, etc. etc. Undetectable. They can manufacture almost anything they want to charge you with.
