President Trump on Tuesday signaled an openness to modest gun-control measures following what he called an “evil massacre” at a South Florida high school last week that left 17 dead and prompted passionate calls from teenagers for reform.
Trump directed the Justice Department to draft a ban on devices known as “bump stocks,” molded pieces of plastic or metal that can attach to a legal semiautomatic gun and allow it to fire up to 100 rounds in seven seconds, similar to an illegal machine gun.
In private, he has indicated that he might do more, telling advisers and friends in recent days that he is determined to push for some sort of gun-control legislation, according to people familiar with the conversations.
In one such discussion, during dinner with television commentator Geraldo Rivera at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the president listened with interest as Rivera suggested raising the minimum age at which a person could buy a semiautomatic weapon from 18 to 21. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that the idea is “on the table for us to discuss.”
So far, Trump’s public stances have not crossed the agenda of the powerful pro-gun-rights National Rifle Association, which endorsed him during the 2016 Republican primary and spent more than $30 million supporting his candidacy and attacking his opponent in the general election, Hillary Clinton. But behind the scenes, Trump is floating ideas that could put him at odds with the NRA.
The NRA did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.
Trump’s attempt at a new tone on the gun issue comes as the politics surrounding the issue appear to be changing in the wake of the shooting last week in Parkland, Fla.

Correct I do have strong opinions about firearms....despite the fact I haven’t handled them. I am absolutely for the right to own and carry for defense. Likely because of the men in the family, throughout generations now, who have all served in the ‘Armed’ forces...... my dad died when I was just four from war wounds so I a very well acquainted with both sides of this issue of firearm and the power they weld.

First, it's not the semi-automatic part of that that has the effect. It's the large caliber of what was probably a hunting rifle - which is not generally a characteristic of the guns they are talking about.
That wouldn't happen with an AR-15...even for an average child of about 8. Drill Sergeants would demonstrate the lack of recoil by placing the butt of the weapon against their 'manhood' and firing it.
That's part of the silliness of the debate - is that people are being given the impression that they are talking about completely different items that what the banners are attempting to legislate. As I noted, an AR-15 is a light-rifle.

Age of majority should not be confused with the age of sexual consent, marriageable age, school leaving age, drinking age, driving age, voting age, smoking age, gambling age, etc., which each may be independent of and set at a different age from the age of majority.
Even though a person may attain the age of majority they may still be subject to age-based restrictions regarding matters such as the right to vote or stand for elective office, act as a judge, and many others.... to purchase alcoholic beverages, the ‘age of license’ is 21 in all U.S. states.. the voting age prior to the 1970s was 21.
It was a Black AR-15... that is what they called it....I’m a female 5’2 about 110 and never fired a gun before..so it kicked pretty hard for me....and was loud!. I remember it well and wouldn’t shoot it again!...
I watched others fire it though....along with other guns they had there. It was interesting... I am of course not a gun enthusiast....but I do understand why many are and respect that.
Growing up our family belonged to a Hunting club....I recall the guns firing but kids were always kept at camp for the most part, not in the fields, so I wasn’t close enough to be acquainted with the use of them.

The number of instances where the “ball gets dropped” on some evil person intent on mayhem is way past the coincidence and deep into the enemy action column. Otherwise the only explanation is the entrenchment of overwhelming incompetence and negligence, epic magnitudes of it, like there’s people in there who it would be hard to understand how they remember to breathe continuously.
It occurs to me from reading through your posts that your opinions are largely based on misinformation you already had accepted and had confirmed for you by propaganda in the media. Just a few facts to illustrate. An AR-15 is almost always chambered to fire a .223 (5.56 mm) cartridge that is, at best, not a “high power” rifle cartridge but “medium” to “light”. Also, at least learn the difference between a “semi” and “full” auto.
I know your heart is in the right place but your lack of knowledge is allowing you to be ruthlessly manipulated by the Brown Shirt Media and you don’t seem to realize it.
I’m always confused at how laws are able to stand on the books restricting the rights of people who are otherwise legally capable of entering into contracts and participating in the political system. The only way it makes any sense is if there is some deeper adhesion contract contained within doing something like taking a taxpayer ID or SS # that states you’re willing to conform to such other regulation as the purveyors see fit.
I flat out ain’t buying what they are selling. Consider, say you and me decide we want to start a “local militia” and announce an organizational meeting next Saturday morning. You and I both know full well that half of those showing up would be Fed Agents from any one of a dozen alphabets and probably at LEAST one from each. We both know that anyone ELSE who shows up is gonna get a “background check” BEYOND “access to nuclear weapons”. We both know this. Yet we are asked to believe the “FBI dropped the ball”.

The problem with that is that anyone who has ever been on anti-depressants will be judged to be ‘mentally ill’ or ‘potential danger to society’- Millions and millions of decent people have taken anti-depressants at one time or another, and who pose no danger to society, but once a ‘mentally ill bill’ is passed- you can bet libs WILL push for anyone who has ever taken them to be banned from owning guns- domestic violence folks too- no matter how slight or false the accusations
Really? He’s old enough to vote, serve and enter contracts and you have to pick one semi auto rifle to ban to that age group? So they can still get a mini 14, M1A, 10-22, etc???
It would make actual logical sense if you were going to do something like say “if you’ve been prescribed or otherwise obtained and taken SSRI medications under the age of 25 then you are prohibited from obtaining any firearm until 2 years since last dosage or you are over 25”.
Since when does any citizen of majority age need to give you or anyone a “reason” to own a Lawful device?
Concentrate on the freakin’ cause (prescription drugs) rather than the shiny media bauble.
