This was soon after it happened and she talks about security to close the area as they traveled....
.....also she said they weren’t allowed off the train when it hit and she was fearful, and then thankful as someone took charge and forced open the doors
They had security officers on the train...( I read that when they got off they pulled their guns)

Weird how this stuff, baseball practice getting shot up, a pol attacked while mowing his lawn, a train full of GOPers crashing, never happens to ‘Rats....
Here’s a question: Were there any pols who were supposed to be on that train but made other arrangements instead...?

Uh yeah....and the conductor didn’t think to blow the train whistle to alert the truck and certainly alert the passengers?

That truck was on a steep inclined road approaching that crossing which is located just below the crest of a hill. The crossing can’t be seen coming from that direction until one gets to the top of the hill.
CSX - that company has been pretty badly mismanaged by its board the last few years, trying for short term profit over long term health.
They’ll probably find some low level manager to sack.
None of that union featherbedding around here. The driver is capable of both driving the truck and operating the mechanical arms to dump the bins. Sounds like your city needs to fire everyone from the city manager down and hire a competent set of folks.
Maybe that low-level manager will commit suicide with a nailgun, or die while shifting weights, or be gunned down by a mugger who doesn’t steal anything.
Around here the truck has a hydraulic device that grabs the can and dumps it into the truck. One operator. Been that way for a 10 years or more.
I’m so confused. Why was this guy even sitting in the vehicle? Was he caught completely unaware? If the other two guys were in the truck with him, how could they have survived? And if the other 2 guys had exited before the crash, why didn’t this third guy? Either they all saw the train coming or they didn’t. Either all three would have died or all 3 would have exited and lived. No?
In our area, there is a driver and two men on the back of the garbage truck.....and it does have the mechanical arms.
The man seen examining the crossing arm was likely Secret Service, not from Amtrak. This long-time untended to malfunction makes the story even sadder. (THO, knowing that the arm didn’t function properly, the driver could have asked one of his passengers to get out of the truck to check out the rails to see if there was anything coming) Just a sad, sad story.
Crozet is still pretty rural, so they probably don’t have anything fancy like mechanical arms on their garbage trucks. And, it keeps 2 people employed. BTW, that part of the world is simply gorgeous and they want to stay rural!
