Enough- The SOTU has become an undignified circus
Vanity | 01-29-2018 | NRx

Enough. The State of the Union Address has devolved from a sober state occasion to political spectacle and ultimately a low class circus. It is beneath the dignity of the Presidency (and Congress though I doubt anyone there really cares). Trump should return to the venerable practice of sending the message in writing. The modern practice of delivering a speech is yet another innovation of Woodrow Wilson, my nominee for the worst President in American history.

Its been a circus my entire life...

I don’t expect it to change this year... I know if I were president, (which I never will be) I would probably go back to what Washington did in 1790... just walk over, deliver a succinct speech and get back to work.

I’d like Trump to give the address from the Oval Office. I agree that giving the speech in front of Congress has devolved into a media circus over the decades, and given the intensely hostile nature of the Democrats, I see no reason for Trump to subject himself to what is bound to be a series of petty insults.

Woodrow Wilson was without any debate the worst President ever.... And liberals love him to this day.

Just tweet it, like RUSH suggested. We're winning, and will continue, then drop the mike.

The most racist, by far. Really set race relations back for decades.

I could not disagree more, this is one of very few situations that President Trump can talk to ALL of America directly. There are many people in America who are only against Trump, because all they have to go by is what is presented by the mainstream media. The media is forced to cover the SOTU, and this is a great opportunity for Trump to convince many how wrong the image the media presents is wrong.

My greatest hope is that millions of average, working class Americans, who voted for Hillary, watch and learn that President Trump is nothing like what the media make him out to be.

A speech is fine.
But they need to stop the inviting of people for political purposes by both parties.

As all the “thumb in your eye” guests the Democrats are bringing are being revealed, I was hoping President Trump would follow the precedent of our first presidents and simply send the speech to Congress (for the record) and, in a nod to the 21sr century, maybe deliver it live from the Oval Office.

There is no requirement it be delivered in person in the capital.

It’s also kind of boring. Five minutes of speech constantly interrupted by 25 minutes of applause.

I am looking forward to it. My brother and I have a date to watch it and I am opening a bottle of 2015 cabernet, so I can enjoy fully. Lap top will be on and I will be weighing in here and at the Donald.

There are few things in life as enjoyable as watching a speech with a fellow compadre in politics and cracking jokes and reminding each other of policies and issues in the past that make up the sentences spoken.

Ok there are probably one or two things more enjoyable, but for political junkies like my brother and me, this is true fun.

(for grammar junkies... since the “me” in the above sentence is the object of the preposition ‘Like” is it correct? Or should have I used the subjective “I” since the entire prepositional phrase is subsumed under the subject “This”???)

I agree. The inviting of special guests has turned the event into a “made for the media” circus, with political opponents using civilians as props.
