People are leaving dogs to freeze to death in the bitter cold

Police in Hartford, Conn., charged a woman Thursday with animal cruelty in connection with a grim scene reported by a neighbor on New Year’s Day: a dog chained to a small shelter outside a home — and frozen solid.

The incident was one of several similar deaths reported in recent days as bitter cold grips the eastern United States, prompting animal rescue organizations and local authorities to issue warnings about giving pets shelter.

Several of the deaths occurred in Ohio. In Toledo, a dog was found frozen to death on a front porch last week. Three other frozen dogs were discovered over two days this week in Franklin County, Ohio, a shelter told a local television station. Authorities in Butler County, north of Cincinnati, said Wednesday that they had charged the owners of one deceased dog with cruelty to a companion animal.

Working as a utility person in the hood I reported way too many people for having dogs chained up with chains that weighed more than the dog and no water or food.

The animals in these cases were the owners.
It appeared in all cases the owners didn’t even know there was a dog chained up out back.

Really PO’d me.
Mgmnt told me to stop calling the city on these people.
I told Mgnmt only way is to stop routing me in the hood.

I'm not too sure about that. I've got a Shetland Sheepdog that loves freezing cold weather, particularly if there's snow. I wouldn't, however, leave him out for an extended period of time.

Not true at all. How did dogs and cats survive prior to domestication by humans? How do feral dogs and cats survive? Untold generations of their ancestors survived without human assistance. What is cold to humans is not necessarily cold to pets. Pets should be protected from extremes but our temperature tolerances are not good representations of theirs.

I guess we must be good people. We provide our feral cats with a warm place to stay and hot food 2 times a day. Thus far it has gotten down to -26.

If they can’t reach shelter because they are tied too short or there isn’t any, then they are at the mercy of the weather just like someone locked out of their house in their pajamas.

We have farm animals that aren’t pets at all but they still have a way to get inside out of rain and snow, and food and unfrozen water. Animals have to be able to stay dry and get out of the wind.

The first dog I adopted after I became economically independent was a cross between a black Lab and an Irish Setter. He looked like a jet black Golden Retriever. His happiest moments came when it snowed heavily where we lived, a Milwaukee suburb. When I opened the door in the morning on a fresh, heavy snowfall, he'd charge out, go into convulsions of joy, and leave the front yard looking like the Russian army had been doing Winter maneuvers.

we had an outside dog...OUTSIDE....even as a kid, we had outside dogs....

the key is whether they can move around, go to the their dog house or get under the porch or other cover....

out dogs were never chained up...

on extremely cold nights, we let our dog into the garage...

our dog lived til almost age 18...and we live in the cold north...

Many domestic dogs are short haired. Not equipped to deal with frigid temps.

That might be a problem for my guy. I notice that when it's wet outside and I tell him to sit he does it very gingerly.

Are you a proponent of the forcible rounding up of homeless persons to be placed in the “protective custody” of the state, even when against their will?

Notice I did say that pets should be protected from extremes in temperatures. In no way am I advocating not taking care of pets which would mean providing reasonable shelter, food, and water.

Actually, it would be more like someone locked outside in a fur coat, not their pajamas. Most mammals are better equipped to handle cold weather than human beings.
