Trump warns Iran 'world is watching' amid rare protests

The US has warned Iran to respect people's right to protest, as rare anti-government rallies, which began over the high cost of living, grip cities in the Islamic Republic.

About 300 people protested in Kermanshah, a city in western Iran, on Friday, according to the semi-state news agency Fars. Police there used water cannon and tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

Protests also broke out in the capital, Tehran, according to social media.

Protests reported in Tehran, Kermanshah and Mashhad US President Donald Trump took to Twitter late on Friday, writing: "Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime's corruption & its squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism abroad.

"Iranian govt should respect their people's rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching!" His tweet seemed to be an almost word-for-word copy of an earlier post by White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, who also warned: "The world is watching."

The US Department of State described the rallies as peaceful.

"Iran's leaders have turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos," it said in a statement. "As President Trump has said, the longest-suffering victims of Iran's leaders are Iran's own people.

"The United States strongly condemns the arrest of peaceful protesters. We urge all nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption."

It’d have to be reported on ESPN for Obama to be aware. Otherwise, he’s too busy filling out his brackets and being an on-the-down-low “bottom” to notice.

They’re on the side of anything Trump is against. It’s written into their DNA.

Wow! Great statement.

Our real shame is that Obama basically dumped the Iranian people in 2009 when they tried to rise up, and then sent the mullah 1.5 billion dollars (including Swiss francs, loaded on pallets into a plane) as a bribe.

That’s going to be hard to undo, but I think the massive inefficiency of an Islamic Communist dictatorship sort of like Albania is beginning to undo itself. Thank God Trump is supporting the process!

bammy sent billions of our money to the corrupt, violent, warmongering regime of iran, run by 7th century throwbacks to savagery.

When last the Iranians protested their oppressive regime in 2009, Obama and Clinton were noticeably silent, refusing even to offer verbal acknowledgement of the events. They were content to see the protests crushed by their colluders in Teheran.

Obama abandoned the Iranian protestors last time they looked to the US to help them overthrow the mullahs.

Let's see how this plays out and how Trump responds.

This is nothing. Most Iranians support the government. The protests are about issues unrelated to international politics. The establishment media is hyping this up to build support for another war in the Middle East.

Why is an administration of savages respected by the balance of the civilized world leftists?

Simple admiration of the brutal, repressive administrative techniques to silence protest that socialists desire to bestow on their own sheeple.

Iran is a large country composed o many different ethinc peoples. FR’s has had a bunch of posts in these protests. Hope someone comes up with detailed analysis of whats going on there.Including perhaps a map of these locations indicating where they are taking place and what group lives there

Should go further than that and support the people’s desire to get rid of a brutal theocracy.

Leftards will stand against this, simply because Trump said it. Of course to the left, freedom is slavery.

This could be a repeat of the Iranian "Green Revolution" (or "Persian Awakening") from 2009 to 2012.

Back then, Obama sided with the Islamist regime over the protesters.

There were protests when Obama was President but he did nothing. Somehow I think things will be different under President Trump. There is a new Sheriff in town.
