A Kentucky man has been accused of harboring a vicious animal after a Christmas Eve pit bull attack in which a woman was killed and her husband injured...the two pit bulls...belonged to their neighbor, Johnny Dale Lankford, 42... Lankford was told of the charge at the Bell County jail, where he is being held on separate charges of assault, domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment and an outstanding warrant...in connection with an arrest Friday.

That was the way I remember it where I grew up. It didn't matter if the dog had been pretty much exemplary up to that point; it was dispatched without much talk or visible remorse.
I know and the more people go after this breed the more puffed up their fans get. My daughter and stepdaughter both live in cheap apartments where pack dogs roam. I am very concerned but neither are gunowners-one is too immature for a gun. Wondering what I can advise them. They cant afford rent elsewhere without a long commute.
Check state and local laws for carrying pepper spray, by the way. I don’t know whether or not the following is up to date.

That is a hard one. Without a gun, anything else can get you eaten by a pit. There are various sprays, but I would not trust them with my life. Pits are fast, and they can be on you in seconds. Once they get hold of you, trying to fend them off with spray would be every difficult even for a strong person. If there are 2 pits attacking, it’s going to get ugly. I’ve seen the results of pits close up. To be honest, I’d rather be shot than be unarmed and attacked by pits.
If they won’t carry a gun, carry a knife, a strong spray and a prayer.
They should be packing pepper spray for both the 2 leg or 4.
Purse size or wearable.
I bought bear spray for our horse riding, about the size of a small fire extinguisher, just for pit bulls. They were the most dangerous animals we met in all our years of riding. Although I was a competitive mounted shooter, a gun would have been really dangerous in those situations.

I’ve had multiple encounters with relocated Citiot’s dogs they let roam.
One put my daughter up against my house. Another pair decided to enter my shop and try to claim territorial rights when I entered.
None are available for comment.
She died in her own yard, which means once again, “they got out.” That is the number one excuse for pit bulls killing people is that according to their owner, they escaped. I had dogs for about 30 years and none of them went hunting people if they “got out.”
Note that according to the article, deputies were notified when the dog that was wounded returned home. The owner didn’t notify them, others notified them. So knowing his dog killed a neighbor and injured others, the owner didn’t turn his dog in.
I’ve seen toddlers walking pits at a crowded beach whilst the family looked on at the cuteness of it all...
Let me give you a clue -- he already is penniless and without property. He is currently being held in jail on $25K bond. If he could raise $2500 he would have been out. He has nothing to take away.
Pit bulls are the dog of choice for drug dealers and low-lifes. No one with any assets has pit bull dogs.
IMHO owning a pit bull should be punishable with prison.
To me, this is just plain stupidity.
Why go through all this hassle to own an evil tempered dog? I get a lot of pleasure love and companionship from my labrador retrievers. And, I don't have to worry about them killing anyone. People with little kids come over and the kids just play with the dogs.
The dogs let me know when visitors come around. They warn me, so that I can do a threat assessment and decide what action to take. If one of my dogs took independent action against a human, his lifespan would dramatically decrease.
Lots of people visit my acreage and bring their friendly kids and dogs. NO ONE brings a pit bull onto my property.

My neighbor has one of these things. Fortunately, they are across the street, not next door, or I probably would have lost a couple of pets by this time.
Anyway, she told me that the people at the shelter where she got this dog told her he was "good with other dogs". A complete lie. The other dogs were elderly, and are now deceased. The only dog left is that pit bull. She was always adopting dogs out of shelters; but, I couldn't believe she would adopt one of these beasts; but, she did.
I would never adopt a dog out of a shelter as the people running these things seem to have no problem lying about the animal, as they did here about this dog being good with other dogs. I think they regularly lie about a dog's age and health.
The problem with pittbulls is that they don’t come with an “off” switch. Might be sweet or whatever, but once they attack, they don’t stop until they’re dead or several other mammals are. Other dogs may bite once, but that’s it. Pitts keep going.
Ban the breed. Put them all down.

The Scoville heat units (SHU) advertised in all brands of sprays refer to the base resin compound (e.g., 3 million advertised for Wildfire 18%). The assay shows what actually comes out in the aerosol: “242,000” for Wildfire 18%, very high compared to others. The test for Fox Labs showed 84,000 SHU.
The OC percentage is also important, though. One consideration for the production of animal sprays is the effort to avoid causing animals more pain than necessary to deter them. I distrust those who promote and regulate animal sprays because of the contemporary prevailing perception that the welfare of an animal (especially a bear or dog) is more important than that of a human being.
