My ex husbands family raised pit bulls and fought them. I never understood the reason for pit bulls and would never trust one because of the insanity that is bred into them..

I agree with you. I love dogs, and think that a large part of dog behavior is from training (or lack thereof).
But there are some breeds that are innately and genetically like a loaded weapon that I do not trust not to go off (no matter how well trained) and pits are at the top of the list.
Give me my Labradors any day.
