ZURICH – Swiss technology is due to hit new heights on Friday when the world’s steepest funicular line opens at one of its Alpine resorts.

Swiss President Doris Leuthard will officially open the $52.6 million project running from Schywz to the mountain village of Stoos, which lies 4,300 feet above sea level in central Switzerland.

The barrel-shaped carriages adjust their floors so passengers can still stand upright even as they climb towards the Alpine plateau at inclines of up to 110 percent.

There is a similar “train” in Hong Kong.

100% is 45 degrees (rise over run).

I was wondering about that! I thought they were going past vertical to inverted.

Always thought a 3% rise (max for most rail traffic) was 3 degrees, but it instead is a fraction representing the rise over the run. So for a 10 ft length of track, a 3% rise would be 10 ft * .03 = .3 ft or 3.6 inches.

The design looks similar to the elevator in the St Louis Gateway Arch

There are no hobos in Switzerland, but you will find gypsies.

Oh, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a hobo in Switzerland.

They do that at all of those fancy spas they have.

“It’s time for your Cat-Whapping-Hobos therapy now.”

Improves your breathing, or so they told me when I asked about the $1000 charge on my bill.

Stoos is a small ski area in Canton Schwyz, which is located in the center of Switzerland. It was one of the original cantons of the confederation. The country of Switzerland makes it’s name from Schwyz (Swiss German for Swiss). I lived one year in the town of Schwyz at the base of the Mythen before relocating to the eastern part of Switzerland in canton Glarus.

Correction: The British grade measurement would be 1 in 0.91. Sorry about that.

Gypsies have a purpose.

A gypsy can read your palm and tell you the future.

What’s a hobo good for?

They sit around drinking coffee and scratching their private places in public.

But, so do the Millenials.

In a world of hobos and Millenials, the gypsy will rule.

And steal your babies.

I watched the video, and read the information.

I remember traveling the Palm Springs Tramway, doing my best to enjoy the different ecosystems along the rise, all the while bug-eyed and white-knuckled. A week later, a tram car malfunctioned along the most almost unaccessible portion of the cable, and folks were stuck for a day.

Sure, this is an engineering feat. The first complete run is a benchmark.

I’ll come back and look at it in a year.

At about the same time, we took the wrong exit off the freeway and landed in East St Louis. NatLamp’s “Vacation” was about right.

Percent grades are the amount of rise per 100 linear units of measurement run. Usually expressed as feet in the USA.

BTW, the now-closed Saluda Grade in North Carolina (owned by Norfolk Southern) has a maximum grade of 4.9 percent, and an average grade of 4.24 percent.

Could be 110 degrees Kelvin. That would get you snow.
