Net neutrality is dead

WASHINGTON — The US Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines Thursday to repeal landmark 2015 rules aimed at ensuring a free and open internet, setting up a court fight over a move that could recast the digital landscape.

The approval of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s proposal marks a victory for internet service providers like AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. and hands them power over what content consumers can access.

Democrats, Hollywood and companies like Google parent Alphabet Inc. and Facebook Inc. had urged Pai, a Republican appointed by President Donald Trump, to keep the Obama-era rules barring service providers from blocking, slowing access to or charging more for certain content.

Consumer advocates and trade groups representing content providers have planned a legal challenge aimed at preserving those rules...

To me the electronic highway infrastructure is comparable to the interstate highway infrastructure. It would bother me a lot to discover that "65mph" is only for the "little people". It would bother me a lot to should "our betters" like Google, YouTube, NetFlix, etc, "pay to play" and steal speed from the rest of us so they can deliver faster.

DUmmies think they’ll undo this with the Congressional Review Act. Guess DUmmies can’t count.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the whole “net neutrality” discussion.

Sounds like this is good, but doesn’t this give Comcast/Verizon options to stall traffic to alternative news sites?

In every city I have lived in from Arizona to Missouri to Indiana, I have always had the ability to get faster internet by paying more for it. I will be curious if someone can answer your question as to how it will affect those of us who already pay more for faster service.

Just to be clear, now companies can pick and choose the content I view on my internet connection whereas before they couldn’t? Is that correct? For some reason this issue was hard for me to wrap my mind around.

I pay top dollar for the fastest internet connection available in my area.

Get ready to pay top, top, top dollar.

and why wouldn’t market forces (aka competition) keep that from happening?

I have choices. If one carrier raises their rates too high another carrier will move in or a new one will pop up and undercut them. That’s the way every other business works.

GOOD!!

Net Neutrality would have made the internet ‘neutral’ the same way the Affordable Care Act made health care ‘affordable’.

The sad thing is they have dark fiber running in front of everyone's homes. They just refuse to modernize their infrastructure as there is no other ISP here.

Century Link is a mile away. I'd bet a dollar to a donut if CL comes here AT&T will suddenly find a lot of high speed BW for us....

I just posted to you that Soros and the marxists created all this net neutrality bs just to destroy the Internet. I even provided links. The internet got to this point without Soro’s net neutrality marxist bs.

You support Soros? Do you understand Soros is hell bent on destroying the USA and freedom and is a hard core marxist?

This is what winning looks like.

The tech barons at Google, Facebook, and other silicon valley Democrat ATMs can go pound sand.

the thing is... many companies already place “limits” on your unlimited plans. They slow down your connection after a certain amount is exceeded on cell phone data plans for instance.

I just dont see what the big issue is here.

I guess some slubs at with the most basic internet plans service might suffer, but for everyone else. This might actually makes things better by freeing up bandwidth.

I live near Chicago and have a grand total of two carriers to choose from. Some people only have one. How many do you have?

It’s not an issue. It’s just a coup attempt by Soros. there was no problem with the internet .

Bingo!

Along with a mechanism to keep profits artificially high through government fiat on behalf of the tech barons, as a reward for continued donations.

EXACTLY! My kids are all teenagers now and were very upset that I was against Net Neutrality because YouTube had convinced them that voices will be censored if this was killed. They don’t realize that they have been spoon-fed liberal propaganda, thus defining the core issue at debate here. I’ve urged then to start reading this site for the truth.

we have a few.

I guess I am just a big believer in the free market.

If company A jacks up their price, company B will undercut them and take their business. If A and B jack up their prices in collusion ... then a new company C will see the opportunity and start up and undercut them both and take their business.
