Future of Kebabs to Be Decided Today in Key Vote
Metro (U.K.) ^ | Wednesday 13 Dec 2017 | Zoe Drewett

The future of the kebab is to be decided in a key Europe-wide vote that could spark the end of the late-night delicacy.

A move by the European parliament to ban the phosphates necessary to keep seasoned kebab meat moist and flavoursome is said to pose a direct threat to the future of the nightclubber’s favourite greasy snack.

An estimated 1.3m doner kebabs are sold every day in the UK from more than 20,000 outlets.

Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, was even guest of honour last year at the British kebab awards. Across the whole of Europe, some 200,000 people work in the industry.

The issue was debated by MEPs in the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday and will cast a final vote today.

If accepted, the favourite fast food could be under threat – leaving lovers of the meaty snack up in arms. In Germany, where the doner kebab is said to be the most popular fast food, the vote has caused particular concern.

Kenan Koyuncu of the German association of doner kebab producers, said: ‘If the European parliament gets its way, this would be the death sentence for the entire doner kebab industry in the European Union.’

The parliament’s health committee has already voted to reject the use of phosphates, claiming there is evidence to link the consumption of the preservative with heart disease.

Generally, they are not allowed under EU law, but exceptions are permitted on strict grounds.

But the European Commission said the use of phosphates in frozen kebab meat is necessary to protect the binding in the meat during roasting and thawing.

It has proposed changing the existing rules, to allow phosphates to be used in kebabs. But if MEPs vote to accept the recommendation from the health committee by an absolute majority (367 votes), the commission’s plan will be skewered.

A scientific review in 2012 suggested a possible link between phosphates, when used as food additives, and heart disease, but the evidence remains inconclusive.

Donner kebab?

Created by, and named after the Donner Party?

I'll pass. Or should I say "Donner" pass?

LOL, that was my very first thought when I saw that!

I remember going clubbing, and there was a big club that had a vendor selling some kind of brat sandwiches or something, but...more than once I remember thinking (while in an advanced state of intoxication) that is wasn’t even cooked...we all used to take to calling them “dogmeat sandwiches”...

A guy who runs a great German sausage cart and catering small biz sometimes offers donners.

The couple I had partaken of were excellent.

I sent my son the link to a similar story about this last week. He loves his Döner kebabs when he goes to Germany. I told him they’re more worried about phosphates in their country than they are terrorists.

My son loves Döner kebabs, along with Currywurst. He told me there are men who walk around with a grill strapped to them, to cook the sausages, and sell them to consumers. He’s bought from them, and had no complaints about his meal.

Hey...when you have bureaucrats involved, there is no small level of detail in problems that cannot be addressed by more laws and legislation!

And thus the Brits and BREXIT! Eurocrats KNOW how everyone should live, just like Orwell's Big Brother!

Bloomberg reported that governments around the world are formulating a tax on meat (like Carbon and Sugar) to curb consumption. (Raising Livestock is Carbon intensive) It is meant to hit emissions targets set in the Paris Climate Agreement. Something about public health improvement too.

I actually took the time to download and read (to a degree, because it was so incredibly bloated and disgusting) the EU Constitution.

You can look at it at https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Treaty_establishing_a_Constitution_for_Europe

I found it interesting to compare to the US Constitution, which is remarkable in its limited scope, brevity, and clarity which is both its strength and beauty. (if only we adhered more closely to it!)

What a bunch of dorks.

LOL, I just went back and began reading it again...I remembered how blazingly stupid it was...here is just a little:

Article I-1: Establishment of the Union[edit]
1. Reflecting the will of the citizens and States of Europe to build a common future, this Constitution establishes the European Union, on which the Member States confer competences to attain objectives they have in common. The Union shall coordinate the policies by which the Member States aim to achieve these objectives, and shall exercise on a Community basis the competences they confer on it.

2. The Union shall be open to all European States which respect its values and are committed to promoting them together.

Article I-2: The Union’s values[edit]
The Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. These values are common to the Member States in a society in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men prevail.

Article I-3: The Union’s objectives[edit]
1. The Union’s aim is to promote peace, its values and the well-being of its peoples.

2. The Union shall offer its citizens an area of freedom, security and justice without internal frontiers, and an internal market where competition is free and undistorted.

3. The Union shall work for the sustainable development of Europe based on balanced economic growth and price stability, a highly competitive social market economy, aiming at full employment and social progress, and a high level of protection and improvement of the quality of the environment. It shall promote scientific and technological advance.

It shall combat social exclusion and discrimination, and shall promote social justice and protection, equality between women and men, solidarity between generations and protection of the rights of the child.

It shall promote economic, social and territorial cohesion, and solidarity among Member States.

It shall respect its rich cultural and linguistic diversity, and shall ensure that Europe’s cultural heritage is safeguarded and enhanced.

4. In its relations with the wider world, the Union shall uphold and promote its values and interests. It shall contribute to peace, security, the sustainable development of the Earth, solidarity and mutual respect among peoples, free and fair trade, eradication of poverty and the protection of human rights, in particular the rights of the child, as well as to the strict observance and the development of international law, including respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter.

5. The Union shall pursue its objectives by appropriate means commensurate with the competences which are conferred upon it in the Constitution.

They don’t call it mystery meat for nothing.

I always look for natural meat on the skewer at a kebab place in Europe. Better places will have that.

Hahahahahahaha! That's hilarious, because that was EXACTLY the thought I had the VERY first time I read it!

FRANCIS: Yeah. I think Judith's point of view is very valid, Reg, provided the Movement never forgets that it is the inalienable right of every man--

STAN: Or woman.

FRANCIS: Or woman... to rid himself--

STAN: Or herself.

FRANCIS: Or herself.

REG: Agreed.

FRANCIS: Thank you, brother.

STAN: Or sister.

FRANCIS: Or sister. Where was I?

REG: I think you'd finished.

FRANCIS: Oh. Right.

REG: Furthermore, it is the birthright of every man--

STAN: Or woman.

REG: Why don't you shut up about women, Stan. You're putting us off.

STAN: Women have a perfect right to play a part in our movement, Reg.

FRANCIS: Why are you always on about women, Stan?

STAN: I want to be one.

REG: What?

STAN: I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me 'Loretta'.

REG: What?!

LORETTA: It's my right as a man.

JUDITH: Well, why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?

LORETTA: I want to have babies.

REG: You want to have babies?!

LORETTA: It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.

REG: But... you can't have babies.

LORETTA: Don't you oppress me.

REG: I'm not oppressing you, Stan. You haven't got a womb! -- Where's the fetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!

LORETTA: [crying]

JUDITH: Here! I-- I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans', but that he can have the right to have babies.

FRANCIS: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister. Sorry.

REG: What's the point?

FRANCIS: What?

REG: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?!

FRANCIS: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.

REG: Symbolic of his struggle against reality.
