Mom accused of being high when 3-year-old son froze to death pleads guilty

Eight months after her arrest, Basinger is now taking responsibility for her son's death. Someone driving by the home spotted 3-year-old Landyn Melton on the front porch in sub-freezing temperatures. It was just 22 degrees at the time.

Prosecutors say his mother was asleep inside and later admitted to using meth two days earlier and marijuana the day before.

"She didn't hear him," said Assistant District Attorney Michelle Lippert. "She didn't hear him leave the room. Didn't hear him leave the house. Didn't hear him banging on the door. She was asleep while he was freezing to death."

Prosecutors say investigators found the toddler's prints on the outside of the door where they believe the 3-year-old tried to get back inside.

...

"She was a good mom," said Brenda Basinger, Jamie's mother. "She was a good mom. She didn't mean for none of this to happen and she loved her babies"

> Basinger has been in jail since her arrest last April. The judge sentenced Basinger to the time she's been in jail and three years of probation. If she violates that probation, she could face an additional 19 months of prison time.

She better walk a straight-arrow line. We can pray that maybe, just maybe, she'll learn from this and turn her life around.

Meth and pot, though.... hmmmm...

If it was a man, he’d get at least 10 years.

There is no equality under the law.

Im sick and tired of drugs being an “excuse”. Not a soul goes through school or the barrage of media on the subject matter and can claim ignorance of the absolute destruction wrought by drugs, and especially meth.

I keep seeing all the comparisons of marijuana to alcohol - and how marijuana is, by comparison, much “safer”. Ok - nice. And this is why marijuana should be legal. If we had a society that actually held people accountable, and when someone causes harm, damage, or death caused or exacerbated by drug (or alcohol) use - then we can talk... Sadly - we are jetting at full-speed AWAY from any kind of personal responsibility/accountability (unless you are a Conservative politician -then they want you to be held accountable with no evidence or even veracity to the charges made).

But back to this particular case - she has “blood” on her hands - she CHOSE to use drugs... chose to use them again and again. She chose to be irresponsible long before she actually used drugs. LONG before her child slipped out and froze TO DEATH because of her drug use. He cried out. He beat on the door (as best a 3 year-old could). He FROZE TO DEATH. It wasn’t a painless, quick death... it would have ben agonizing until he lost consciousness.

Sorry if is sound like a vengeful jerk. I’m not connected in any way - other than having dealt with drug-using “parents” in my capacity as a pastor and as chairman of a local ministerial alliance that often god drug into such cases. I’ve seen WAY too much of this garbage - and its a wonder more kids don’t die from this.

Oh -and by the way - I am 100% in favor of trying meth makers and dealers - then summarily executing them in front of the court house steps upon conviction. Period. No 2nd chances. (of course, this joins a list of crimes that should result in executions upon conviction).

Totally with you.

I have friends who are DEAD because of “harmless drugs” *and* booze.

I’ve had some really nasty things happen in my life and somehow managed to cope with all of them, utterly free of intoxicants.

No, sorry, but that's totally ass-backwards.

It has got to be the other way around: FIRST the govt. must be prevented from violating the Constitution by denying citizens their right to do with their bodies what they wish, THEN we can talk about "holding people accountable."

It took a Constitutional Amendment (No. 18) to deprive Americans of their right to drink alcohol - can you cite the Constitutional Amendment depriving Americans of their right to, e.g., smoke marijuana?

Women never take responsibility for their actions when they face negative consequences. The hive comes out and says they are a good mom, a good womam.

See if the mom says her daughter is a bad mom, then her own image as a mom gets tarnished.

None of them take deserved blame. Always duck it.

Its only an excuse when a woman uses it. Men get no reprieve using drugs as an excuse.

You mean like partial birth abortions?

Okay.

Ahem... I wrote: "...with their [meaning: their own] bodies."

Are you trying to pick a fight with me? I should think that, among Free Republic conservatives, it would not have been necessary to emphasize / clarify that - sadly, I am wrong.

Here’s an interesting article for you.

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/sciencenotfiction/2011/06/20/your-body-your-choice-fight-for-your-somatic-rights/#.WjEL1FWnGUk

“The right to do with their bodies what they wish” kills other people, who made no such choice, every day.

What do we say to them?
Screw you?

We’re guaranteed the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Some drunken hophead killing a car full of kids denies them all of the above, because he/she wanted to do with their own body, as they wished.

A doped up skank hit a biker friend of mine and took off her whole leg, including her hip bone.
If, by a miracle of God, another friend and his medically adept wife had not been there when it happened, she would be dead.

The doctors still can’t figure out how she lived.

So no, I will not defend any “right” to mind altering substances, ever.

Sorry if that bugs you, sincerely and politely.
