‘The Simpsons’ Team Considering How to Handle Apu Backlash, Hank Azaria Says

The Simpsons team is looking at how to handle longtime Springfield resident Apu Nahasapeemapetilon after a recent wave of criticism of the controversial Indian character. Notably, Hari Kondabolu’s documentary The Problem With Apu examined how the character reinforced hurtful cultural stereotypes. But Hank Azaria, who has voiced the character since 1990, has remained quiet publicly about the matter. TMZ recently spoke with Azaria, who said that the documentary was definitely food for thought and could inspire change on the show.

“I think the documentary did make some really interesting points, and gave us a lot at The Simpsons to think about and we really are thinking about it,” he said.

Apu seems to be one of the smartest and most likable characters on the show. Can’t be having that.

Thank goodness that no other groups are mocked or stereotyped on The Simpson’s. (extreme sarcasm)

The creators of The Simpsons blinked. Now the race hustlers know they’re weak and will come to the negotiating table. South Park’s Trey and Matt would never grovel like that, see Token Black.

The new normal has to be that only cis-white males can be mocked. All other groups are sacrosanct and must do the mocking.

Not necessarily. They could farm some content from the documentary, to mock the critics. I hope they do.

Has Hari Kondabulu had a hit TV show for almost 30 years? No??
Then Hari should have a Slushy and a smile and go STFU!!

Easy solution. Tell anyone who doesn’t like the Apu character to watch something else. You don’t like opera, don’t watch opera. You don’t like Apu, don’t watch Apu.

Pretty simple, actually.

They should consider telling the prig commissars of the Left to take a long walk on a short pier, to STHU and sit down. Every character on the Simpsons is a stereotype, most especially Homer Simpson. Apu is generally a great guy.

The Left has just about ruined comedy. Jerry Seinfeld won’t play a college campus because of them, which should tell you all you need to know.

Simpsons makes fun of everyone. No one’s feelings are spared.

Apu is one of the few not regularly ridiculed.

But the politically correct know how to threaten.

We shouldn’t stoop to their level by using their snowflake vocabulary (cis)... we should just use normal language and call us what we really are, “normal white men”..

:)

In writing characters you only have two choices, you can play with the stereotype, the kindly priest, or against it, the priest is a demon. If you look at what makes a character memorable, they are quirky. In a thirty minute episode, each character only has a few seconds on the screen. You can’t have a rich, fully fleshed, lovable character developed in that time. The viewer therefore has to fill in much of the character’s background from the viewer’s background. We’ve all met the fat, lazy public servant. So, they make the cop fat and lazy and then, in his few seconds, when fireworks are exploding all around him, he says, “Nothing to see here. Move along.” You can’t have him rushing everybody to safety, which a real cop might do. That’s not funny. It’s not entertaining. In the end, it’s about entertainment. Let’s say they make Apu a wonderful, selfless man who strives to improve the world all while being “diverse.” Oh, and they have to take away his stereotypical accent and make him sound like Thurston Howell the Third. After a few hours of trying to write a funny line they’d probably delete his character from the script.

As Curly once said, after a particularly brutal put down from Moe;

“I resemble that remark!”
