Scientists have captured a mysterious hum coming from deep inside the Earth, but they are still no closer to working out what it is.
It has long been known that the Earth constantly generates a low-frequency vibrational signal.
The first attempt to detect this hum was made in 1959, but it wasn't until 1998 that scientists finally proved its existence.
Since then, there have been hundreds of attempts to record the Earth's hum, but they have all been made using seismometers on land.

Lots of people hear the Great Hum. Boffins claim it is just tinnitus ... either that or mass hallucinations, or they hearers are just plain crazy because there is no such thing as the Great Hum; the Earth does not hum ... hummm.
It makes no difference whether one is inside or outside, but is often more pronounced when lying down. Inside hum is often louder than the outside.

And does not sound anything like the over amplified noise on those various recordings - at least to me. Perhaps the people making the recording have never heard the hum themselves and are just recording when someone else say to record. Don’t know. Speculation.
If you have ever heard a diesel engine running - albeit a bit rough - and listened closely for a few minutes - you can hear each cylinder firing, in this case there are occasional momentary lapses in the firing causing a rough sound before it resumes normal even firing.
Here (one of those dots on the WI map), the sound seems loudest when lying down and goes away when rising from bed. But just now, over or under I should say the noise of several hard drives spinning I can hear a low faint hum if I concentrate.
Where is the best places to hear this? I’ve never heard it other then these sound files. At least I don’t think so. I’ve heard a large earthquake coming that was freaking creepy scary.

Here is a diesel truck idling. I raised the speed and slowdown the video's on both. It sounds similar but I don't hear the pistons in the "hum" videos.

A good friend of mine used to be bothered by low frequencies he could hear. Four years in Marine artillery corrected the problem.

I think, it would seem, you could tell if something is in your head by tightly covering your ears, if you can still hear it it is likely to be in your head. If you can’t hear it, it is outside of your of your head.
If you cannot hear it where you are, then you are not in the 2% that can. The World Hum Database has dots were the sound is heard.
Maybe it sounds different to some than others. Perhaps an uncataloged feature. In the distant past, for months I had to sleep next to a 671 purring along, so I’m intimately familiar with diesel noises in all their variety.
Guess you’d have to ask those studying the phenomenon. I haven’t a clue.
If you’ve ever ‘tightly’ covered your ears, you’d know that does not work.
The sound is real and is recordable, the only real debate is where is it coming from and what produces it. You just are not in the 2%. Good bad - don’t know - I’ve heard it most of my life. Most don’t hear it, according to studies FWIW, until they are over 55. But that could be because most live in noisy environments until they get near retirement. Speculation only.

Being in or out of the city really makes no difference. I have heard it in the city also. Just find a quiet space - as quiet as you can find free of horns, sirens, traffic, music, and shouting neighbors, etc.
From what you say, I doubt you are in the 2% which is a blessing.
If you are not in trouble, do not go looking for some to see what it is like. You may not like what you find. I tell people that about seeking an ‘adventure’ - adventures can be deadly. Watch a good movie instead.
I take stories like this with a great deal of reservation, the same as I take purported memories of past lives. There are too many possible, alternative explanations for them.
As well you should. But as I say, kick the tires. Check it out and judge for yourself.

We're all buyers and caveat emptor is up to us. You've already bought what you think is the truth. So have I. So put what you've bought to the test to see if it can stand the test of brutal inquiry. The truth will stand the test.
