Having worked at the State Department on Arab-Israeli negotiations for the better part of a quarter century, I came up with more than my fair share of half-baked ideas.
But the one issue I was smart enough to avoid -- and I advised every Secretary of State to do the same -- was Jerusalem.
And yet, if you believe some media reports, President Donald Trump is preparing to do precisely that.

If there is a third rail in the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, it's Jerusalem. Loaded with political and religious significance, it's long been a tinderbox just waiting for a match. And we've witnessed numerous fires usually breaking out on the overlapping sacred spaces Israelis and Palestinians, Jews and Muslims, share and contest on or near the holy sites -- the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount.

The odds that Trump will stumble in his Jerusalem gambit are pretty good. That's because the point of the exercise does not seem designed to achieve any real foreign policy goals.

The problem is we just don't know what the Administration's peace process strategy is. And in the absence of a coherent one, the Jerusalem gambit appears to be a one-off -- a combination of Trump's frustration over having to use the waiver again, not yet fulfilling his campaign commitment to open an embassy in Jerusalem, and his willful desire to go where none of his predecessors have gone before him.
As such, the President's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital is likely to be far more trouble than it's worth -- adding another layer of complication to a peace process that already faces long odds.

Jerusalem was always the capital of Israel, and that’s the only reason Muslims ever had any interest in it.
Modern Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. Muslims are allowed to be residents, citizens, voters.
The so-called Palestinian state is governed by a recognized terrorist organization that the “Palestinians” voted into office.
In a civilized world, all Palestinian children would be removed from the homes of their parents to be raised in a more healthy environment, away from terrorist indoctrination.
Author advised previous Secs of State not to do it because they knew their president did not have the ‘nads to do it. This one is bad ass like a boss and it’s the right thing to do.
And right there you have the reason why there is no peace in the Mid-East (besides the Arabs)....

What is dangerous is showing weakness to the Muslim world. There is nothing more dangerous right now.
The only interest the muzzies have in Jerusalem is taking something from the Jews. I mean if the place was where Lil Mo first practiced pedophilia it would have some muzzie significance.

Nope. Giving terrorists a heckler’s veto is a dangerous gambit. Finally acting like adults and guaranteeing that thugs and terrorists never gain by violence is the responsible course of action. Move our Embassy to Jerusalem, and recognize reality - Israel’s capital is the historically Jewish city of Jerusalem.
The difference between Israel and Europe is that the Jews had no choice but to set up a nation in a Muslim neighborhood, because that’s their ancestral homeland, and the promised land of their religious beliefs. On the other hand, Europe is importing Muslim immigrants to transform their continent into a Muslim neighborhood.
Israel defends both it’s citizen’s safety and it’s identity as a Jewish state. Europe defends neither.
Now that’s the face of Jewish Liberal, if I ever saw one. He got all the Woody Allen chromosomes, and none of the Moshe Dayan chromosomes.

Recognizing Washington DC as America's capital is a dangerous gambit. The Piscataway people resent the American occupiers seizing their land. The Piscataway people were forced to relocate to camps near Point of Rocks, Maryland once the Americans took control of the district and forced the native Piscataway's to live as refugees out of their homeland. I call upon the leaders of the United States and the Algonquian tribes to sit down together and work out a "two state solution" with a "road map to peace" where they can share the land together in peace. Western Washington DC (on the Virginia side of the Potomac) can used by the Americans while eastern Washington DC (on the Maryland side of the Potomac) becomes the new capitol city for the Algonquian nation.
