My older kids and I have started using charcoal toothpaste. I bought it solely because it’s glycerin free, not for the charcoal, but hope I never have to go without it.

The stuff is amazing. Teeth feel cleaner after just a day, and get better with each use. I splurged on the polishing powder and adding that in has helped even more.

My teenager was talking about how much he likes it and then said that he’d never seen my teeth so white. Makes me cringe at just how bad my teeth must have looked before.

While you might not notice any negative effects right away, the American Dental Association warns that activated charcoal is too abrasive and will wear away your tooth enamel. Once the enamel is gone, it’s gone forever. The layer beneath, known as the dentin, becomes more visible. Dentin has a natural yellow tinge, meaning that you’re likely to be left with teeth that look more yellow or stained than they did to begin with.

I will add that if you have any problems with teeth being sensitive, the last thing you need is to wear away enamel that protects against sensitivity.

I use Monkey Brand tooth powder after I brush every other day. It’s great. It’s cheap enough you can buy one for each member of the family. It’s easier that way because you can just dip your toothbrush in it.
