A diet designed to imitate the effects of fasting appears to reverse diabetes by reprogramming cells, a new USC-led study shows.
"Cycles of a fasting-mimicking diet and a normal diet essentially reprogrammed non-insulin-producing cells into insulin-producing cells," said Longo, who is also a professor of biological sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. "By activating the regeneration of pancreatic cells, we were able to rescue mice from late-stage type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We also reactivated insulin production in human pancreatic cells from type 1 diabetes patients."
The reprogrammed adult cells and organs prompted a regeneration in which damaged cells were replaced with new functional ones, he said.
In type 1 and late-stage type 2 diabetes, the pancreas loses insulin-producing beta cells, increasing instability in blood sugar levels. The study showed a remarkable reversal of diabetes in mice placed on the fasting-mimicking diet for four days each week. They regained healthy insulin production, reduced insulin resistance and demonstrated more stable levels of blood glucose. This was the case even for mice in the later stages of the disease.
The diet cycles switched on genes in the adult mice that are normally active only in the developing pancreases of fetal mice. The genes set off production of a protein, neurogenin-3 (Ngn3); thus, generating new, healthy insulin-producing beta cells.

Thanks. Hope you can one day eliminate it.
You must weight about 100lbs if you keep that up. I am 5’5’’, 130lbs, age 65 (now i feel i am calling a health show) medium build, and with a kind of slow metabolism (get cold easily). I usually do not eat until i feel weak and need energy, and then it usually is not much, and i try to eat low fat foods, but the amount is much more than you list here.
Usually if i go more than 12 hours or so before eating I have little energy, including mentally, so i do not feel i am accomplishing much. But if it go beyond when i usually would eat it is usually for spiritual purposes, which can accomplish much. Thanks be to God.
I’ve heard about the health benefits of fasting, but the Wheat belly diet and ketogenic diet both are reversing type 2 diabetes, lowering cholesterol, and resulting in large weight losses. Ketogenic diets are also recommended for people with epilepsy and other brain disorders. I lost almost 8 pounds in less than 2 weeks, and felt better than I had in years (increased energy, decreased depression, decreased anxiety) on the ketogenic diet. I had multiple occasions where I had to eat out, so I stopped the diet, but my husband and I are going back on it after Thanksgiving. We’re both diabetic and overweight, plus he has more severe medical problems. Here’s a link to WebMD about the benefits of a ketogenic diet:

Didn’t see your post before I posted mine. The ketogenic diet is an exciting medical breakthrough. I do find it difficult to get in enough fat, though. The recipes for “fat bombs” don’t appeal to me, even though I love candy and sweets. And I don’t like fatty meats, either, but as I said, after Thanksgiving, we’re back on it. Our eye doctor convinced us of its value.
Very low calorie diets alone are not the answer. Avoiding simple carbs (sugars, high glycemic fruits, starchy vegetables, white flours) and decreasing low glycemic fruits and vegetables, and stopping grains altogether, will result in improved body function, large amounts of weight loss, and normalized blood sugars, IF you also eat mostly fats and proteins. Ketogenic diet. My plan allows 21 grams of carbohydrates, 88 grams of protein, and 112 grams of fat/day. You calculate the amount based on your height, weight, and amount of body fat. Guaranteed, you will NOT get hungry. Fats cause satiety, a feeling of appetite satisfaction. It takes a lot of time and energy to break down proteins into glucose, the nutrient your body usually uses for fuel. Fat doesn’t break down into glucose. Most carbohydrates break down quickly into glucose. Fats will break down into nutrients your body can use, other than glucose. It’s complicated, and I’m not explaining it very well, but the ketogenic diet is healthy for most people, and it works! Getting off grains is the hardest part for me, but you can make bread from nut meals and seeds.
I’m fasting until Thanksgiving.
I'll do it for a month and it helps me with a more normal eating plan when I'm not fasting.
Our physiologies could not be more different. I'm 59, 6'4" and 250 lbs. I don't get cold and enjoy lower temps.
The plan works for me as it helps reset/adjust my "thermostat" so to speak.
Before I started, I was 267 lbs.
Interesting. Thanks. I always feel better when I eat avocados. An apple and an avocado everyday plus lots of protein makes me mighty happy.

My dear, late, great-aunt used to say “The whiter the bread, the quicker you’re dead”.
....but you can make bread from nut meals and seeds.....
Do you happen to have any good recipes? TIA.
I’m a creature of habit, especially as concerning foods, so if something doesn’t taste like whatever it’s supposed to be imitating, I’m usually disappointed. However, comment sections on some of the keto sites, often rave about the deliciousness of the recipes. If you can eat gluten, here is a really good recipe for low carb bread:

I made this, using plain old wheat flour where it asks for wheat pastry flour, and ground up oatmeal into oat flour with my immersion blender. The wheat gluten I ordered from Amazon (Anthony’s brand) -— much cheaper than buying it at the grocery store. If you cannot tolerate gluten, there are several sites with breads made with almond flour and flax meal, etc. (I buy flax seed at aldi and grind it into meal with my immersion blender). Here’s one:

Basically, just go on the internet. One site I don’t like, is “Elana’s Pantry”. None of her recipes were fit to eat, IMHO. But maybe it’s just me. Many blessings to you!
