Harveywood Backlash: ‘Justice League’ Tanks at Box Office
Breitbart ^ | 18 Nov 2017

So just how bad is this $93 million opening? We will start by comparing some apples to some other apples.

To begin with, Justice League is supposed to be DC’s Avengers movie, the one moviegoers are supposed to be breathlessly anticipating, the payoff where the superheroes and the universe finally all come together. With that and Justice League’s $93 million opening in mind, Marvel’s Avengers opened to $207 million. The second Avengers movie, Age of Ultron, opened to $193 million. The most recent Thor chapter, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, opened to $122 million.

Worse still, Justice League’s opening is the lowest of the entire DC franchise: Suicide Squad ($133 million), Wonder Woman ($103 million), Man of Steel ($116 million), Batman v. Superman ($166 million).

From a dollars and cents point of view, the reported budget for Justice League is $300 million. The Avengers cost just $220 million.

DC made four vital errors with Justice League. The first three of these errors are called Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad, and Man of Steel, three titles that, by various degrees, disappointed the fans. Once the public loses faith in a brand to deliver, that toothpaste cannot be put back in the tube. In other words, we have no faith in DC to make a decent movie, and there are just too many other options for a freeborn American on a Friday night.

The fourth mistake was toying with the presence of Superman, who is the head of the Justice League. Advertising a Justice League movie without Superman is as dumb as advertising an Avengers movie without Iron Man. Who the hell wants to see that?

Other than the Bright Star of Gal Godot’s Wonder Woman, this franchise has hit the rocks.

I just watched it and frankly it wasn’t as good as Batman vs Superman which got bad reviews.

I think the whole good guys vs bad guys scenario has simply been played out. There are only so many ways to set up the good guys, make them fail, then rebuild them to make them win in the end through determination and team work or other good human concepts.

Maybe I’m just getting old and have seen it too many times now. A child with fresh eyes would hopefully see the same thing in a better light.

The acting was fine, the story line was fine, Superman is revived so all is well with world in that way, so it’s just a matter of taking out the current villain which they always do eventually.

More explosions! Less plot!

Shorter intervals between scene cuts, thus shorter dialog (dealing with shorter spans of attention, here); and, characterization beyond superficial? Nah

So when can we expect Gilligan’s Island as a musical?

It will be a remake with one straight male (Gilligan), two gay males, two lesbians, one trans-woman and one trans-man. Fun for the whole family!

“Justice League is supposed to be DC’s Avengers movie”
Are we supposed to know what that means?

I don't even know why I'm reading this crap!

Moving right along...

Occasionally, DISH has a “Free HBO/Showtime” weekend...a preview.

Initially I said, “Good, I can DVR some good movies this weekend.” But, as soon as the menu dumps, and I scan it, there’s usually not one movie I deem worth recording. Not one.

Hollywood has gone the way of the fall of the Roman Empire. Way too many untalented stars, directors, and producers (and writers).

So, I go back to TCM to watch the classics...movies that we great BEFORE CGI, unlimited cussing, blood and guts, sexual innuendoes (homo, and otherwise), social messages, and political correctness.

Lots of good, old, B&W movies on Youtube also, free.

I haven’t been to a movie theatre since the release of “Top Gun”, and then only because my son wanted me to see it, knowing my enthusiasm for airplanes, etc.

Haven’t missed it a bit.

Maybe that's why Nolan's The Dark Knight is so widely hailed as the greatest comic book film adaptation yet. In that movie the Joker wasn't "taken out". Apprehended in the end yeah but by then he'd achieved EVERYTHING he had set out to accomplish. The Joker won. He beat the good guys at their own game.

Critics don’t seem to like it, however the audience rating at Rotten Tomatoes is currently 85%.

I saw it Friday and found it to easily be the best DCEU film to date, even better than Wonder Woman.

I just don’t care about Hollywood movies anymore. Once they decided to get political, I began to ween myself off of them.

I watched it yesterday with my son. I thought it was a really great movie for what it is. A superhero flick. Had a good time watching it.

It help a lot too if you are familiar with Stepenwolf, Apocalypse, Boom Tubes, Mother Boxes and Darkseid (the DC equivalent of Thanos). These were all elements in the movies. They did take a few liberties with these elements, but also did a reasonable job of properly portraying them.

Generally speaking, the movie was too dark. Batman is a dark character, but Superman is not. And when I say dark, I mean the cinematography. It was too dark. The Avengers movies were bright, the photography was crisp and detailed. You could see the scratches in Iron Mans armor. Not so with the Justice League. The story moved from one thing to another to another, but this was just a way of conveying the fact that these people were completely separate and unrelated to each other. They were brought together because they had to be, and frankly weren't very happy about it. But hey, the world's got to be saved, so here we go.

I will continue to watch any and all Marvel or DC superhero films that are produced, but as you may have gathered, I'm a bit of a fan. I just can't understand why DC isn't producing better movies. They have EVERYTHING they need, but they just can't seem to get their shit together. Sad.

Thanks

I hope they do the Hamlet as a musical for that. Because a musical within a musical is so original...

No.

Please don't.

As a kid who grew up in the Marvel Universe at its height (around FF #32 - FF #60) and despised DC, it pains me to say that Nolan's Batman films are the greatest superhero films that have been made -- and probably never will be eclipsed.

But Nolan's non-superhero films have been light years ahead of Batman. He's done the best in that genre, and it's good that he's moved on.
