Mozilla launches new Firefox today

Quantum it is rather good

Mozilla today launched Firefox 57, branded Firefox Quantum, for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. We have been running it for a month or so and it is rather good.

Mozilla calls Quantum “by far the biggest update since Firefox 1.0 in 2004”, but even ignoring the hyperbole it does bring much needed performance improvements and a visual redesign to the Firefox stable.

Firefox 57 for the desktop is available for download now on Firefox.com, and all existing users should be able to upgrade to it automatically. The Android version is trickling out slowly on Google Play, and the iOS version - which is usually updated separately from the other platforms - should eventually arrive on Apple’s App Store.

Mozilla says that Firefox Quantum is twice as fast as Firefox was six months ago, and according to the still in development) Speedometer 2.0 benchmark, it also uses 30 percent less memory than Chrome.

While Firefox has historically run mostly on just one CPU core, Firefox Quantum finally takes advantage of multiple CPU cores on desktop and mobile. Firefox Quantum features a faster CSS engine written in Rust that runs quickly, in parallel across multiple CPU cores, instead of running in one slower sequence on a single core.

Firefox Quantum prioritizes the tab being used before other tabs you have open in the background. It includes a new CSS engine called Stylo, which takes better advantage of multiple CPU cores that are optimised for low power consumption.

Thanks. Do you know of a way to check that? For some reason, my old FF was 32 bit. I know I’d tried to install the 64 bit version but for some reason, the 32 bit was always the one that ran.

“The new Firefox is also a 64-bit application when installed on a 64-bit version of Windows”

Please tell me what extensions for HTML for use in FR. THis would save me a lot of time. Thanks in advance.

BBCodeXtra 0.5.4

But it won't work in the new FireFox 57, only FF 56 and earlier

The way you worded that title makes no sense.

Ok I added it to Palemoon which in all regards is the same as FF. I was able to install the extension and it is active but typing this I do not see a pop up of HTML markings or anything. How does it work?

I haven't tried BBCodeXtra 0.5.4, so I can't help you on that.

What I do use is Cynwoody's "Free Republic Posting Form Enhancer" , for several years now, and I like it A Lot

Been using FF for years. Love it. But this new version won’t remember custom text size settings for Free Republic

...

It seems to work for other websites, but not FR. I wonder what’s different about FR.

I don't know about anyone else, but for some reason, my version of Firefox 56 refused to load any web pages after some point earlier today. I checked to see if a software install of any kind had been performed in the last 24 hours (there hasn't).

I even rebooted my PC to see if that would help. Nope. I would open up Firefox, and I ended up with a blank browser with the navigation and menu bars at the top. Clicking on any of several hundred bookmarks did nothing. I couldn't even open up Yahoo's main page.

Figuring this was a sign, I just installed Firefox 52.5 ESR. I assumed it would be like installing a new browser, but even with the version "downgrade", it keep my current settings, including cookies (was still logged into FR). I guess this buys me more time until the 52 ESR support ends late in June 2018.
