November 25. . . . English news. Fearful panic, and what is called suspension of the Bank of England; incorrectly so called, it would seem. A restriction on the issue of notes is removed. The issue is authorized without regard to the amount of bullion on hand but it doesn’t appear that the Bank has ceased to redeem its circulation or is likely to do so.

FYI, the Half Price Books in Mason, Ohio (Cincinnati area) has a copy of the full four volume set of “Lee” for $100. Would bust my budget with Christmas coming up, but I thought you would be interested.
I wouldn’t get buyer’s remorse over that purchase, but I have a similar bulging budget situation. Btw, I checked on Amazon and the 4 volume set is available new for $849.99. There are used ones from $85.00, but I don’t imagine the condition is too good.

November 30. Dined with Miss Josephine Strong and Murray Hoffman and went to the Academy of Music; the season opening with Robert Le Diable and Formes making his debut here as Bertram. There was the biggest operatic crowd ever got together in New York – no standing place was unoccupied. Deutschland thronged the galleries and endorsed Herr Formes with vociferous bellowings. The opera was well done. LaGrange admirable in the part of Alice, as she is in everything.

Good book. I recently finished Ron Chernow’s Grant biography and found it disappointing.
I’ve been reading “The Dred Scott Decision” by Don Fehrenbacher (same book you’ve been excerpting, same author as this collection). I’ve gotten a much better appreciation for the fine line Douglas was trying to walk during this time. The fact is that because of Dred Scott and the Lecompton Constitution, the northern wing of the democrat party will get hammered in the 1858 elections. Only those democrat congressmen who break with the southern wing and oppose the Lecompton Constitution will keep their seats.
