Thanks. I lived in Los Angeles for seven years and do know this issue is more complicated than my “Grow up†post acknowledged. However, from a practical perspective, the “Lynch Weinstein!†outcry disgusts me. Whatever Harvey Weinstein has done — and, as a member of the NRA, I resent HW’s attempt to shift the focus to moi, believe me! — has he really never treated ANYONE in Hollywood generously? Are there no people besides Lindsay Lohan — and kudos to her for loyalty, by the way — who could be saying publicly, “Whatever he may have done to others, Harvey launched my career and never hurt me in any wayâ€? These people were happy to make movies with him and take his political donations, yet they can’t even hold their tongues during his time of trial? To save their own hides, they denounce him publicly? If I were in their shoes, I would keep my mouth shut publicly and send him a message of support, a message that would include my urging him to do right by his family and by any people he had hurt. THAT is what friends do.
The idea that there should be no statute of limitations on rape is ludicrous! One exception, and this is brilliant: a woman is raped, goes to the cops, hospital, etc. The rapist isn’t caught, but there is forensic evidence. Most states now allow prosecutors to LOG that evidence as a suspect. So, if the guy is caught later, the statute of limitations does NOT prevent him from being prosecuted. Totally different than when a woman comes forward years later to say, “Oh, nine years ago, XYZ raped me.” Now, I’m not saying that rape necessarily didn’t happen, but how the devil to you sort through conflicting testimonies, fading memories, etc. years later? It’s nuts.

I know. This trivializes what actual victims of rape and sex abuse go through. Last year, my then-10-year-old son and I emerged form a NYC subway stop and faced a drunk loser who exposed his private parts to us. My son and I were both disgusted, and I called the cops. I told my son that there are pathetic people who take drugs and can’t control themselves and we should call the police when we have the misfortune of crossing paths with them. That was that. I mentioned the incident to the counselor at my son’s school, but it hasn’t turned out to be an issue. Should I TELL me son that this minor event actually ruined his life? These people are nuts.
