'I Went on Holiday to the World's First Hotel for People Who Weigh Over 20 Stones'
Wales Online ^ | 19 OCT 2017 | Amy Coles

Posted on 10/19/2017 10:56:16 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The hotel Is Custom-Built for People Who Weigh Over 20 Stones

A five-mile private beach, reinforced beds, widened doorways – this is what tourists can expect during a stay at the world’s first resort for larger people.

Size 20 model Holly Macgillivray, 27, is among the first to stay at The Resort – on the secluded island of Eleuthera in Barbados.

She was staying there for an upcoming ITV show – and has revealed the unusual facilities on offer for people staying there.

Unlike a standard hotel, the resort – billed as a “sanctuary” for larger people – is custom built especially for people weighing more than 20st.

All the sun loungers are reinforced and can withstand more than 40st of sunbather.

The chairs measure one metre wide, doorways have been widened and all the beds are reinforced with two-inch steel bars.

There is a five-mile private beach for privacy and a stay here comes with a daily buffet were guests can eat what they like for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Holly, from Ruthin in Denbighshire, headed to the island with eight other overweight Brits for the show My 18 to 30 Stone Holiday.

She said: “I saw an advert in the newspaper for a TV show looking for British people over 18st.

“They wanted people who were unhappy with how they looked, had broken sun loungers or couldn’t fit in plane seats and wouldn’t go on holiday because of their size.

“I didn’t fit that mould. I go abroad all the time. I wear bikinis. I can fit in a plane seat.

“But I wanted to show fat people are not all unattractive and smelly.

“I was the smallest on the show. Some of others had never been to the beach before.”

Holly enjoyed nine days on the island – which is the brain child of owner James King.

He designed it as a “safe haven” for plus-sized holiday goers where they can feel comfortable hitting the beach.

They only take small groups of between two and 28 at a time so guests can relax and have a holiday “without any judgement whatsoever”.

On the show, the group is counselled on body issues and confidence by Scottish model Mel Cohen.

Holly, who models for Yours Clothing, says she is a confident in her skin and admitted she initially thought the idea behind the resort was “insulting”.

She added: “I think that’s because my size is not an issue for me.”

But the stay changed her mind after seeing how the others were able to relax after feeling like “they weren’t constantly being watched” or “pointed” and “laughed at”.

She said: “That place is a necessity for those people over 22st. These people are missing out on so much.

“Everyone over eats for a problem or a reason. If it was that easy to lose weight there would be no fat people in the world.”

Holly, who weights 20st, was reduced to tears during a group session with mentor Mel when she was asked to speak about a photograph of herself she hated.

This shocked Holly, who admits she is confident “90% cent of the time”.

She hopes her appearance on the show will inspire others to love their bodies.

She said: “Love yourself and just be who you are. Being fat is not the worst thing you can be. It’s just your outer case.

“I would rather be fat than a horrible person. I say I would rather have two chins then two faces.”

1 stone = 14 pounds.

One “stone” (I’ve never heard “stones” used) is of course 14 lbs. So the 22-stone example would be 308 lbs.

There is a legitimate point about your character being more important than physical appearance. But accepting who you are does not mean that you should not keep trying to improve yourself physically, mentally, and morally. There is a point where your weight becomes extreme, threatens your health, and impacts how others will perceive you. We shouldn't be rude about it, but if you weigh 300 lbs, people are not going to want to see you in a bikini.

The normalization of obesity is dangerous to physical and emotional health, and to our wallets.

When I glance a little too long at an obese person I am not judging her appearance but, sadly, envisioning her medical future - diabetes, heart disease, trouble breathing, early death. And then I get a little torqued knowing that my tax dollars will go to pay for her medical care and “disability”.

Well there are plenty of health issues with any fatness, deliberate or not. Food addicts. If they were crack addicts these hotel people would be enablers AND making money off the addicts.

“But I wanted to show fat people are not all unattractive and smelly.

Why would she include smelly when the article was about APPEARANCE?

Methinks she inadvertently admitted something that I had not particularly noticed about fat people.

And while I know some pretty heavy people who are really nice and take care of themselves and and dress well, attractive, that kind of weight is not.

Those folks are in the 600 to 1,200lb range, not 300lbs. I weigh 325lbs, believe me, I know the difference.

"I would rather have two chins then two faces."

So.. Better than having the 2 (or more) chins AFTER being 2 faced?
