“For one salmonella case we know of in an outbreak, there are up to 30 others that we don’t know about,” CDC veterinarian Megin Nichols said.
A “large contributing factor” to the surge, Nichols said, comes from natural food fanciers who have taken up the backyard chicken hobby but don’t understand the potential dangers. Some treat their birds like pets, kissing or snuggling them and letting them walk around the house.
Poultry can carry salmonella bacteria in their intestines that can be shed in their feces. The bacteria can attach to feathers and dust and brush off on shoes or clothing.
But illnesses can be prevented with proper handling. The CDC recommends that people raising chickens wash their hands thoroughly after handling the birds, eggs or nesting materials, and leave any shoes worn in a chicken coop outside.

Never did like to eat yard eggs or yard chickens. The chickens could get underneath the outhouse and would eat the feces from the donors. The chickens in the chicken house were fair game as they were isolated and didn’t get into the stuff the free rangers did.

And the meat birds MUST be grown on factory farms and bred to be so big that their own weight can break their legs while they live in dark, filthy, cramped conditions. Meanwhile, you MUST get your eggs from a similar factory farm in which the hens are confined in cages so small they cannot even turn around.

Yes. It’s been quite a while since I was really attacked by the geese, but now if they see me coming too close they bend down, thrust their beaks forward, and hiss at me. I generally find it wise to carry something in my hand to wave at them and make them think twice.
They also like to bully the weaker ones and pull out their feathers. But they are great property guards. Them and our four dogs.

When we raise our chicks we would put 1 Tbsp of bleach in one gallon of water, heat up a couple of cups in microwave, submerge eggs in for 30 seconds.

After dinner we used to take our table scraps and scrape them over the wire fence for the Kirby sisters’ chickens.

Chickens are raised all over the world, with little or no problems ever. Until you get the state and a bunch of idiots that get chickens for the first time with no guidance, in the US.........
Lets not go into raw milk, a world wide epidemic with no issues except in the US.

We used to have chickens and the hens would walk around picking up bugs, whatnot and singing to themselves.
