Don't Dismantle The Statue of Liberty

Posted on 10/19/2017 11:06:25 AM PDT by Strac6

Rosemary LaBonte to the editors of a California newspaper in response to an article written by Ernie Lujan who suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the immigrants of today aren’t being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry. The paper never printed this response, so her husband sent it out via internet.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented.

Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved goodbye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought alongside men whose parents had come straight over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan . They were defending the United States of America as one people.

When we liberated France , no one in those villages were looking for the French American, the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country.

I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty , it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill.

I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet. (As La Raza is)

Thank goodness the Statue of Liberty is on federal property. Because if it were on city property, Mayor de Blasio probably would tear it down.

By the way, It was a lot harder to get into the USA back then too. We had actual limits on the number of immigrants we would take. And at times in history, we took NO immigrants at all in order to give the masses time to assimilate into our American culture. Immigrants had to go through a medical exam and present proof of their origins, heritage and standing in the country from whence they came.

I know this because we still have all those documents that my Great Grandfather had to present to even get into the country.

Indeed - immigrants 125 years ago were rejected and sent back for having communicable diseases, mental illness, criminal records, socialist leanings.

Today, America celebrates those things.

” Immigrants had to go through a medical exam and present proof of their origins, heritage and standing in the country from whence they came.”

The same story that my great, great grandfather passed down to us through the generations. As per the story, my ancestor came from Norway when he was 13 and they did the medical exams right after questioning. I think it was within the same line of people which was more efficient than today lol. When we watched Godfather II, my dad told me it was almost the same way when Vito Corleone entered via Ellis Island.

No, they aren't. They are being treated FAR better. When my forbearers came from Ireland in the mid-19th. century they were met by Anglo-WASPs who openly compared them to monkeys and apes. They had to make their way into very dangerous jobs in mills, mines and factories for pennies a day. There was no SNAP program, no WIC, no welfare, no Obamaphones, etc. etc. etc.

Next thing you know they will demand that all those graves on foreign soil should be destroyed, like all those graves in Normandy.

It’s also worth noting that in those days there were many jobs available for unskilled or semiskilled immigrants. Today, not so much.

It’s the Statue of Liberty, not the Statue of Immigration.

Most also had to have a sponsor here...more helpful was to have a sponsor and a job waiting.

I know my grandparents came here and had to pass a medical exam, swear they were not anarchists and wear a name tag that said they were not insane.
So the rest of the bellyachers can stfu...heard e-damn-nuff out of ‘em.

[[Don’t Dismantle The Statue of Liberty]]

Expect to see something by snowflakes similar to the following:

We have to dismantle it, as she is obviously racist- she’s white- holds a torch like the KKK used, and and and... she also represents a time when people had slaves- Every statue made before the year 2000 is racist- every white person born before 2000 is a racist- blah blah blah-

The last restoration of the Statue of Liberty was in 1984-’86.

However, since then, materials technology has greatly advanced. So when the next restoration is needed, at least internally it could be a complete redesign.

Let us give proper attribution so that we know where the stink lies. From a little internet research, the newspaper in question that chose NOT TO PRINT this reply is (and perhaps will be a 'was' in the future) The OC Register (Orange County - SE of Los Angeles). While the newspaper, under prior ownership, had a libertarian editorial bent, after a bankruptcy sale, it was sold to a Denver-based newspaper consolidator management company, Digital First Media.

As for this excellent response, when the responder talks about mother country flags and such, I am strongly reminded of the photo of a Trump Campaign protest.

Remember it?

Yes we also had very restrictive exclusion laws that were enforced.

You would be excluded and put back on the boat if you were one of the following:

Chinies

Indigent

Had any sort medical problem

Did not support the US Constitution

Were a member of a group opposed to democracy

Were gay

Were likely to become a public charge

Had a criminal history

That's just a short list, there were many more and thousands never got of the island and were returned home.

The funny thing is, with the exclusion of the Chines on the above list the rest seem prerequisites today.

The USA was expanding fast in those years.

One thing most LEGAL immigrants arrived with was a STRONG WORK ETHIC. I don’t see this today. Everybody wants everything, but no one wants to work hard.

I am female-—almost 78. I have worked some very unusual jobs in the past to keep the rent &mortgage payments up to date. I did most of my work in Accounting/bookkeeping, but I have sold auto parts-—worked in a machine shop grinding cylinder head chambers—worked as a grocery checker—worked at a tire store busting tires (not behind the counter)—worked in a factory making parts & assembling air distribution ducts...like the ones in all your houses.

I have run a small horse ranch for over 24 years & do most everything myself. I don’t ask for help unless I really need it, and my neighbors know this. I never play the ‘helpless female’.

These invaders today don’t want to assimilate-—they want to conquer. The sooner we all realize this, the better. If it takes a war to turn this around, then so be it.
