Well yeah, presumably the State has an interest in encouraging parents to take care of their children, and marriage is by far the most effective means that humans have devised in accomplishing that.
I saw this one before. The author honors and respects his parents long marriage with three or four children, but says marriage is too dangerous for him in this day and age.
I’ve had many arguments with some of our liberal FReepers who believe the State should butt out of marriages. They argue it is a religious thing and therefore, it is no business of theirs if homos marry or whatnot.
Nonsense.
Leave all the religious aspects out of marriage if you like, but it still remains a contract. A legal binding agreement between two people. And the state can no more disinvolve itself with a marriage contract than they could with a similar legal contract involving real property or whatever.
Besides, the State has a vested interest in healthy marriages and traditional families.
Unfortunately liberal democrats have a greater interest in replacing the father with a welfare check and making sure minorities stay on the plantation with broken homes and a broken economy as the result.

I do too.
But after a complete withdrawal of any emotional, conversational, and physical connectivity by my wife (we rarely talked, even about bills/kids/etc. for over 4 years, and no physical intimacy for that time as well), I moved out of the house. I had hoped to ‘shock’ her, and get her to decide to talk with me, help clean the house, cook dinner, etc. (all the things I did). The pastor told her that she can’t have me move back in just because it’s inconvenient for her to have to do all the taxi’ing of the kids, etc. Well, almost a year later, and she’s hired an attorney, and we’re going through the divorce.
I will not get married again.

The end game of marriage has to be addressed, not the window dressing at the front door.
And right now, marriage is a liability for the man, and divorce is an asset for the woman. Until this feminist precept is addressed, nothing else matters. Not the "looking for the right spouse" or the "how to make a marriage work."

I agree in general, but I’m not sure that argument really goes against same-sex marriage. If I’m not mistaken, one of the issues in the cases was in fact whether there was a compelling governmental interest in prohibiting same-sex marriages, and it wasn’t clear that there was much there. If one single woman is allowed or even encouraged in some ways to raise a child on her own, that doesn’t leave much room to argue that two women can’t do it.
