Plastic Coyotes Deployed To Ward Off Sea Lions At Newport [California] Harbor

Officials have reportedly spent roughly $200 on the statues and placed them at strategic points along the docks at Newport Harbor.

The effort carries with it a twinge of irony: Newport along with several neighboring O.C. cities have been dealing with ongoing coyote activity in the area and have even gone so far as to allow residents in Huntington Beach to trap or kill the animals.

Hmmm...are sea lions even aware of what a land predator looks like?

Is that Venus de Wiley on the deck of the boat?

Oops, that’s a dock, not a boat deck.

Except an adult male sea lion could eat ten coyotes for breakfast...

Yeah, I can’t figure out why a coyote would be considered a threat by a sea lion.

Back in the ‘80s I had my sport fisher in the Bay Area and sea lions were a real nuisance. They crapped all over the docks and would actually prevent people from getting to their boats.

You don’t want the fool around with a male. It’s a pretty formidable animal.

That statue looks like its trying to taking a dump.

The sea lions would laugh at it.

I have heard from several environmentalists that coyotes nearly decimated the sea lion population in California, far exceeding the number killed by sharks or killer whales, before PETA stepped in and placed plastic wolves on the beaches to scare away the coyotes. However, with the coyotes scared away the wolves started killing the sea lions. Luckily, PETA stepped in again and placed plastic grizzly bears on the beaches to scare away the wolves. However, .......

They took another picture of him and actually caught him taking a dump:

Now they have both sea lion poop and coyote poop.

We have a boat in Ventura. If a sea lion gets on the dock someone usually runs them off, even though we’re not supposed to. We’ve had them crawl up there and have their baby and then the whole darn dock gets shut down until they decide to leave because they’re protected.
We love our sea lions, just not on the docks. Lol
