The Federal Aviation Administration says it will check to see whether any laws or regulations were broken when a low-flying pilot dropped live turkeys onto an Arkansas festival over the weekend.

The annual Yellville Turkey Trot in northern Arkansas has included a turkey drop for more than five decades, though sponsors in recent years have distanced themselves from the practice.

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

Wild turkeys can fly. They spend most of their time on the ground, but they can fly up to around 100 yards to get away from predators. The turkey in the picture looked like it had just been thrown out and hadn't reached a good aeronautic trim and was likely headed for a lumpy landing. Turkeys are not known for graceful eagle like gliding technique.

“I’ll be blunt...anyone who throws live turkeys out of airplanes is sick...and I don’t see anything funny in this whole subject at all.”

The U.S. Army repeatably threw live people (including me), out of airplanes. Most of the time we thought that was pretty hilarious (*). However, please accept my regrets for having offended you...that was not my intent.

(*) Paratrooper humor

They were making it easier for the birds to fly. The birds didn’t have to expend any energy to take off.

I must be sick, I think it's hilarious!

(The article implies but does not state that the birds were fine. The article states they were subsequently chased.)

The turkey dropped in the youtube vid above may be a wild turkey, but certainly does not appear to achieve good aeronautic trim (it’s tumbling) on the way down. OTOH the article states people are chasing them on the ground. Another discrepancy is that it is stated in the vid that 4 turkeys were dropped, yet some guy being interviewed says “several burnt up in the wires” and “some were hit by cars”. I detect considerable exaggeration in the interview.

Maybe it’d be better to drop via small parachutes “dummy” turkeys with prizes in them. Like cuts of frozen turkey.

More likely the other way around since they have been dropping turkeys at this event for years.

"As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."

Well that is because they can fly. Just not for long distances.

Oops, that was supposed to be in quotes: “good aeronautic trim”, as you said it 1st!

Live wild turkey, not domesticated ones, are used for being tossed out of airplanes in this festival held in an Arkansas town every year. They used to toss them from the top of the courthouse....now it's from a plane.

These heavy birds can fly, but generally, in their normal lives, they fly from tree top to tree top at altitudes up to around 100 feet.

The plane's much higher altitude and being thrown out can stress them out and cause disorientation.

Last year two died on impact, this year four were found injured and bleeding on the ground.

Yes, they DID die and splat on impact like bags of cement at a similar festival in another state.

I'm not PETA, don't have pets.... but I certainly can't find any cause to champion such twisted treatment of living creatures and I can't find humor in it all as evinced by some on this thread.

To each his own, I guess.

Oh, he violated a few regs there, guaranteed.

(Federal Aviation Regulation, FAR)

FAR Sec. 91.15 — Dropping objects.
No pilot in command of a civil aircraft may allow any object to be dropped from that aircraft in flight that creates a hazard to persons or property. However, this section does not prohibit the dropping of any object if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property.

You simply cannot toss a 25mph bird from an airplane going at least 55mph.

It’s Arkansas.

If this case through it will open the doors on Tyson’s, Con Agra, Butter Ball and a whole slew of small big dogs that own Little Rock and every courthouse in the state.
