Windows 10 To Surpass Windows 7 Before 2017 Ends, According To Recent Data
Fossbytes ^ | 10/16/2017

Posted on 10/16/2017 10:38:07 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The market share of Windows 10 is rising and, if the numbers by known analyst firms turn out to be true, Windows 10 might have a greater market share than the all-time popular Windows 7.

According to the numbers by Statcounter, the total market share of Windows 10 as of September is 39.3% which isn’t much less than that of Windows 7 (43.99%). Also, the market share graph in the case of Windows 10 is constantly rising, it saw a bump of 1.43% between August and September.

By looking at the graph, it’s visible that there has been a decline in the popularity of Windows 7, possibly due to more people upgrading to Windows 10 and almost every new PC comes pre-installed with Windows 10. So, by default, people use nothing but the latest version of Windows.

However, one thing to be noted here is this comparison only includes various Windows versions. If different operating systems are brought into the picture, Android has already surpassed Windows months ago.

We might be able to see some improvements in Windows 10’s popularity once the Fall Creators Update is released to the public this month. And if the highs and lows continue in the similar fashion, Windows 10 might wear the popularity crown before 2017 says goodbye.

Don't panic, but Linux's Systemd can be pwned via an evil DNS query
How to Crash Systemd in One Tweet
etc, etc, etc

The software itself was adopted way to early and is not at all mature. The attack surface is immense and growing. EWONTFIX has achieved "meme" status within SystemD. And the author(s) appear to have little appreciation for stability or security. If ever there was a Linux application that sought to employ the "embrace, extend, extinguish" strategy developed by Microsoft, this is it. I feel the Linux community has begun to better understand this. My two cents, anyway.

Sure, I just bought a brand new Win7 laptop from Dell. 10 has nothing I need and plenty I do not want.

why would we waqnt to stay away from systemd? is it a virus or instability issue?

Systemd is a mess. It is allegedly an attempt to replace init.d with something more robust. However, it is a freaking mess that is really hard to follow. Whereas before, you could take a look at the desired runlevel directory (i.e., rc3.d) and could get a really good feel with just a glance at it of the order in which everything was going to start, now it's a spaghetti bowl of crap that you really can't trust.

Things will fork off, with a myriad of dependencies such that you can't be guaranteed from one boot to the next whether a system is going to come up cleanly or not.

Logging with systemd is binary, so you can't just look at syslog and read through the information to determine what went wrong and why.

Finally, a number of packages have bought into the whole systemd, such that you now have a crapload of things tied into your init system, that really have no need to be. This can cause breakage that is really hard to track down.

Don’t care. They’ll have to pry Win 7 from my cold dead fingers before going to Win 10.

Amen! Original Win 7 diehard here. Updates turned off. Between Eset, Malwarebytes and ADW Cleaner, never a problem.

Only way I would even consider Win 10 is if Microsoft turned off all the spying software and mandatory updates. And then I'd have to think long and hard.

Thus far, Win 10 offers me nothing I need that I already can't get via Win 7.

Win 10 is a great OS, make no mistake about it. But the "push" updates whether you want it or not and all the "telemetry", which is another word for spying, is just too much.

I volunteer at a Computer Learning Center where we have 15 Lenovo desktop PCs with Win 10. It is almost a full time job to keep up with them. I feel really sorry for IT folks who work in a Win 10 shop with hundreds of PCs. Trying to keep all those synched must be a nightmare.

I have a good friend who does corporate computer networking work under retainer. He pretty much says to his clients, "If you want to go with Win 10, please cancel our contract."

Menu structure became nonfunctional in W10. DW's laptop just got the push (surprise!) and could not find snipping tool from start menu.

Start/run not intuitive and the Win icon shows the tile structure with MSN bloatware and celeb gossip news.

Found snipping by right click, search, type "snipping.". I'm sure menu can be customized and modified, but the point is the design is not user friendly "out of the box."

Besides, If I want to customize and compile, I will go back to gentoo.

The reason why some would want to stay away from systemd are numerous, here is a link to a page against systemd.
http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Arguments_against_systemd

The advantages of systemd are a faster boot than sysVinit and Upstart and being easier to get services restarted that have quit.

JULinux is a respin distro, the most recent version is based on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS xenial. It has a different default theme and different wallpaper than Ubuntu MATE 16.04 Here is the link. https://sourceforge.net/projects/ultumix/

Immediately turned off updates after firing it up. No hint of the dreaded W10 nag stuff. Dell may have known and cleared that crap from computers it sells.

Looks like FR is having issues round-tripping ßuddaßudd's name.

It's tripping over those two lower-case sharp S's.

Yes. I have to deal with it at work as well.

They started switching to Win 10 at work about 2 months ago and now one of our training contractor websites is unusable from the Win 10 machines.

Great thing is, is that the first machines to get loaded were machines in the trainiag group.

Hey- been looking into systemd a bit- can’t really decifer what it does that’s bad except maybe open up the os to a possible DNS attack? Also, it seems it might not boot up properly from time to time? for the average user like me, who basically just use the os to browse internet, email, watch youtube etc, would the Systemd be a major problem? Or is it more a problem for for those who develop for linux and programs? I’ve been readi8gn a few forums on the issue- and it seems about split on for or against opinions

[[ Only way I would even consider Win 10 is if Microsoft turned off all the spying software and mandatory updates.]]

If they’d do that- give us back soem control of updates, then I’d be onboard too- but till that happens- I’m linux for my main os and windows 7 OFF-LINE for games and windows only programs

The only thing i liked about windows 10 was that it updated quickly- windows 7 is notorious for taking days to update and beign hard to update (had to find single KB downloads in order to get it to even search my computer to find needed updates- it was a nightmare- took me days to get all the updates-

Linux on the otherhand updated in about 10 minutes- windows 10 as well- I dread doing windows 7 updates- but love the os itself
