I agreed to a recent upgrade of an Apple phone.

Never again.

Totally different operating system. Had to learn many commands over again.

Screwed up access to the web. Have to put in password everytme, and certify the same computer over and over and over.

Big mistake.

Doesn’t that constitute destruction of property?

Apple has the right to do what they wish with “their” iPhones.

After all, those devices are merely being “rented” out to consumers at a price of $500-1000 per year.

People are only paying for the right to use Apple devices. Same with their music platform and apps and storage. You don’t get to “own” anything from Apple.

This should be illegal.
If my phone is out of AppleCare Warranty, and needs repair, I should
be able to take it to a repair shop of my choosing. I purchased the phone.
it belongs to me.

Apple may be one or two steps behind when it comes to rebranding the technological innovations that others have come up with... but they most definitely are a corporate innovator. They are always pushing the limits of what a corporation can get away with.

Evading taxes, hiding profits off shore, frivolous lawsuits suing others for making phones that are rectangular with rounded corners, etc... etc... they are close to the leading edge on these types of areas, but this is certainly a shining example that demonstrates that they don’t steal every idea from other corporations. Congratulations Apple, screwing people who have purchased your products with OS updates... I thought that Microsoft was the leader in this type of behavior, but targeting devices repaired by “unauthorized repair centers” that are not paying Apple extortion fees... It is a brilliant twist!!! I hope that Apples army of lawyers will sue other corporations who try to copy this innovation.

People buy Apple because they don’t understand anything about the technology and don’t want to learn, they just want all their stuff to work. So they have to play by Apples rules. They own the game.

Maybe others will follow this plan by Apple.
Imagine the damage caused purposely. What next? tv sets, cameras, any electronic gizmo such as a Telsa?
Maybe that house you bought, shame if your window was to be broken unless you buy from us.
Caterpillar does not want farmers to have 3rd party companies repairing or the farmers themselves fixing what they own.

This is not a “pushed out update" as it still requires the user’s interaction to download and install the update. The warning is valid due to the fact that the security of your modern iPhone and iPad is dependent on the existence of FOUR inter-registered APPLE MANUFACTERED components that require a special piece of equipment that only Apple and Apple authorized repair stations have that can properly re-establish that registration when one or more of these components is replaced or sometimes disconnected. These four components are the Boot ROM, the Encryption Engine Processor with its Secure Enclave storage, the Encrypted Flash Storage, and the TouchID (now the FaceID) Sensor. The reason for this is to prevent unauthorized access to your private data which could be compromised if any one of these four were to be exchanged for another from a different iPhone. If such a non-registered State is sensed, the iPhone will fail to boot after an iOS upgrade or reinstall is done. This is the ERROR 53 CODE reported when the TouchID first came out which indicated a non-registered component. . . Because ignorant, or unethical unauthorized repair shops were replacing broken screens with screens that had pre-installed third-party touch sensors instead of taking the time to carefully remove the TouchID sensor without disconnecting it. Since the TouchID sensor is ONE of those four inter-registered components that MUST be re-registered by Apple for the iPhone to proper and secure operation, that really caused the owner’s problems later. It has nothing to do with Apple wanting to disable anyone’s iPhone, but rather to keep them secure. — PING!

No surprise here, they did the same things with Mac Book Pro’s with third party SSD’s years ago.

Can’t really disagree with this policy.

It’s quite possible that the parts installed could have compromised firmware. Exploits like this have been demonstrated out in the wild.
