In an interview with The Star on Friday, Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters made it clear that while hes under no obligation to explain why he sits during the national anthem, he thinks those whove heckled him and posted angry messages on social media have him all wrong. He also made it clear that he cant worry about how he is perceived.
In a conversation that was quintessential Peters honest, blunt, unapologetic he spoke about his ongoing protest for the first time since September 2016.
I aint trying to get into a back and forth conversation of me trying to prove that Im not being disrespectful or that I am being disrespectful toward the American flag, Peters explained as he sat at his locker. Man come on, man. Im an American, bruh. Im an African-American that was born in this wonderful country that we all can live in. How about we start all protecting each (expletive) other and come together, you feel me? It will be better for it.
Peters comments, with a handful of teammates looking on, came at the end of one of the most controversial weeks of his short NFL career.
After sitting on the bench during the anthem on Monday before the Chiefs beat Washington 29-20 on national TV, Peters night included giving up two touchdowns a rarity for the two-time All-Pro and cursing at a heckling fan.
Since then, Peters, 24, has taken note of the steady stream of criticism he has received. He also has grown tired of fielding questions about his anthem protest.

Clearly we come together by disrespecting the very things that unite us ... How come we cant all understand that here on free republic come on man it’s basic as burning down your own neighborhood to show it’s like drastic men you know... Racism
There was a game on Monday with the Redskins, my hometown team? Missed it, on purpose and every other NFL game until Goodell is gone and in jail and the players clean up their greedy, anti-American, anti-white people acts.
Actually watched part of a baseball game tonight and enjoyed.
Peanuts! Popcorn! Ice Cold Coke!
The good times are back at my house.
“Im an American”
+1
Yeah for offensive tackles :o)
The guy has always been a pain in the butt. The Chiefs knew what they were getting.
Really, this is so easy. Fine, suspend, release in that order.
By self-definition, “Hyphenated-Americans” are not true, loyal Americans.
I doubt that today Peters can make a score on either the ACT or the SAT high enough to grant him entry into a college or university yet he spent at least three years in higher education somewhere.
As long as there is an SEC there will be really stupid football players.
thug talk, with all that bro and can you feel me caca. What a ridiculous state of affairs. And isn’t he the Chiefs that said fork you beach to a fan last week?
the idiot owner of the Cowboys took a knee
whole team is a a bunch of pus8ies
Yes Marcus, let’s have that conversation. Maybe you would like to start with these...
In 2015, a police officer was 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by the police.
Black males have made up 42 percent of all cop-killers over the last decade, though they are only 6 percent of the population.
Not surprising.
Fire that SOB.
Agreed!
Yeah exactly.
If you’re an African American, then you’re an African first. If you’re an African first, then you’re not an American, regardless of your citizenship.
Translation of what Marcus Peters means: Why don't we all 'come together' by AGREEING THAT I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG.
