In an interview with The Star on Friday, Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters made it clear that while hes under no obligation to explain why he sits during the national anthem, he thinks those whove heckled him and posted angry messages on social media have him all wrong. He also made it clear that he cant worry about how he is perceived.
In a conversation that was quintessential Peters honest, blunt, unapologetic he spoke about his ongoing protest for the first time since September 2016.
I aint trying to get into a back and forth conversation of me trying to prove that Im not being disrespectful or that I am being disrespectful toward the American flag, Peters explained as he sat at his locker. Man come on, man. Im an American, bruh. Im an African-American that was born in this wonderful country that we all can live in. How about we start all protecting each (expletive) other and come together, you feel me? It will be better for it.
Peters comments, with a handful of teammates looking on, came at the end of one of the most controversial weeks of his short NFL career.
After sitting on the bench during the anthem on Monday before the Chiefs beat Washington 29-20 on national TV, Peters night included giving up two touchdowns a rarity for the two-time All-Pro and cursing at a heckling fan.
Since then, Peters, 24, has taken note of the steady stream of criticism he has received. He also has grown tired of fielding questions about his anthem protest.

Another wonderful reminder WHY the draft should be reimposed. And I’m not referring to the NFL draft.
Future contracts should have a clause that penalizes the player for political protest display at the rate of $xx per game, calculated to by the end of the season the player gets Nothing!
His required college English courses must been reading "Dick and Jane". Bet his favorite part was "seeing Dick run".
Jerry Jones took a knee with the Cowboys. That was the straw that broke a lot of backs. We had the idea Jones was a patriot, but there he was kneeling with what used to be America’s team.
Here’s the problem. Roger Goodell didn’t hire himself. The owners have his ear, and they had it back when Kaepernick started this hatefest. Far from being dissatisfied with the way Goodell let matters get totally out of hand, the owners were pleased. We know this because there were stories about how his contract was going to be renewed. That talk didn’t stop until Trump intervened.
The owners are as responsible for the mess as Goodell. There’s no other way to read the fact that they wanted him for another five years.

No time for or money to the nfl and these overpaid, ungrateful anti-American losers. nfl? ...screw’em. They jumped the shark...bigly.
Pro Tip: Sitting on your ass while the National Anthem is playing is showing disrespect for the Flag. You may have your reasons, but this fact remains true.
Peters dishonors all of the Blacks that fought for the flag, and sought to make America a better place instead of tearing it down. He now nothing of being an American. He is a Globalist slave.
Peters, you want to protest? What are you paid? Do it on your own dime and your own time. Or do what the average American would have to do, on their own dime - take out an ad somewhere. But quit telling us its O.K. to use the flag for your own personal protest. It IS disrespectful man.
When you think about Americans like Carney, who really did have a tough life, the supposed problems of an NFL football player who earns millions of dollars a year seem petty at best.
Keep digging!
I've got to admit that it gives me pleasure knowing that it's been decades since they've gotten a penny from me. And it reinforces my initial decision to walk away never to return.
Mr. Peters, if you are an American, you know people can protest and that means protesting morons in the NFL!!
“He also has grown tired of fielding questions about his anthem protest.”
Funny. The “protest” was supposed to send a message and start a conversation. They aren’t even trying. It’s all about being rude and disrespectful - and in that area only it’s a huge success.
I didn’t read the full article because it’s unworthy of my time. If that’s what passes for an “American” these days, we’re done. Happily, it would appear that the majority disagrees with him. Welcome to the welfare line.
Did he really say (paraphrasing): Let me separate myself from America, so we can come together as Americans? And “bruh”?
Manages to contradict himself in two sentences.
You forgot serve on a jury
I always thought that was some pretty lame marketing. But if you're going to sell yourself as America's Team, honoring the flag would be an expected part of the package.
