Police were called to the Johnston home of 30-year-old Erin Lee Macke on Sept. 21 after receiving a report that children had been left unsupervised, the Des Moines Register reported.

While conducting a welfare check, police found Macke’s four children – two 12-year-olds, a 6-year-old and a 7-year-old -- alone.

Police discovered that Macke left the U.S. a day earlier and wasn’t set to return until Oct. 1, the Register reported. She did not arrange any supervision for the children, authorities said.

When I was 12 (54 years ago), the mother and father across the street went to New Mexico for a week. I stayed at their house and watched their 4 kids (10, 8, 6,and 3), cooked, did the laundry, supervised the kids in the pool.

My mother was across the street in case I needed anything (I didn’t).

It seems crazy now - especially supervising the kids in the pool - and I feel fortunate that there wasn’t any kind of medical emergency.

It’s stressful raising 4 Children as a single mother.

Everyone said it would be easy. Who needs a husband?

“There isn’t enough information here to condemn the parent.”

Are you kidding me?

Because this is an story where the kids are some country people in Iowa, that makes it ok because some dude 200 years ago was in a military?

“I do not agree. 12 year olds may be left for a few hours by themselves, but for over a week, no way. The “authorities” were well advised to step in here.”

I’m almost wondering if these was some “mom” from the inner city that left her kids alone to go on vacation, would all of these guys be bending over backwards to make excuses!

“duuuuur when I was 12 I had a paper route and knew all the cops in town!”

And I guarantee none of thee guys were left home to watch their siblings while their parents took off overseas either.

Yep—I was babysitting my sister and BIL’s baby by age 12, and then with the second one as well by age 14—though only for a day or evening.

Other family were in nearby houses, as with your situation, but still, that was considered normal and I was fine.

When I was twelve I was quite able to get myself and my eight year old sister to school if my parents went to work early.

I didn’t know that was considered an unusual skill.

I don’t see anyone here saying that the situation as reported is okay.

Only reminiscing about how much more responsibility kids had back in the day (or some doubting the story as reported).

Exactly. The stories of “when I was that age” are predicated on having a parent or supervising adult relative at hand. According to this report, this woman made no such arrangement.

Older kids need to be at school an hour before younger ones. Six/seven year old kids waiting there an hour before school started were questioned closely.

How mature are the two twelve year olds?

I agree. it used to be a common thing.

In that area, they weren’t likely in danger. But kids normally dropped off by parents in cars who suddenly show up walking when almost no one else does are going to get asked questions.

Custodial mom not in the country, no adult supervision. That couldn’t be ignored in a very upscale suburb. How hard would it have been to at least have a relative or neighbor the kids could rely in when someone asked a lot of questions?

Just because many of them can`t does not mean they should`nt be taught, even dogs can take care of themselves if people will let them alone.

Hey, if it’s not against the law to let 12 year olds watch their siblings a couple hours after school until a parent gets home that evening after work, then it’s ok to let a 12 year old watch them while a parent takes off to Europe. Two 12 year olds make it double ok. Right?

Were both 12 year olds birthed by her as in twins or did one belong to someone else?

They could also have been some 10 to 11 months apart. Maybe the mother was into the so-called Free Range treatment of children.

" Although I’d hit it, she is still guilty."

Mom is a skank, pure & simple. She's so self centered, what's happening to the kids is not a priority. Then, in the "look at me" bikini pics, there's those weird zipper tats on her right and left side. Not to mention those splotchy fat legs pictures of her & an couple of the inconvenient kids.

Why didn't she just get a local child molester to watch her crumb crunchers, while she did her European vaction?

we clearly need a test to approve parenthood. This woman screams out for governmental control. Someone has to protect children when their parents are idiots.
