iPhone X expensive? No, $999 is a 'value price', says Apple CEO Tim Cook

Apple's new iPhone X $999 price tag only looks expensive, according to Apple chief Tim Cook.

Asked by ABC's Good Morning America presenter Robin Roberts whether the iPhone X's price tag was "out of reach for the average American", Cook replied that it was "a value price actually for the technology you're getting".

After explaining that most people pay don't pay the full sum upfront and often receive carrier subsidies and trade-in discounts, Cook also suggests that whether the iPhone X is out of reach for most people is beside the point.

That's because Apple's goal has never been to sell the most phones. The technology it packs into its phone, which explains the price, merely reflects what phone addicts want.

"The iPhone in particular has become so essential in our daily lives, people want it to do more and more, and so we built more and more technology in to be able to do that," said Cook.

"Apple has never been about selling the most of anything. Our objectives aren't big revenues. Our objective is to make products that enrich people's lives. We want to help people."

What does it do that, say, an iPhone 6 doesn’t? Just curious

You’re right a phone should receive and transmit calls easily, quickly, efficiently. But, my iPhone SE is also a computer. And I love it.

Of course it’s a good deal.

$1/day for something you’re going to use a LOT is a good deal.

My phone is my...
- phone
- web browser
- music player
- video player
- weatherman
- home automation control
- classroom
- still camera
- video camera
- music editing studio
- video editing studio
- social forum(s)
- calendar
- personal assistant
- personal trainer
- sleep monitor
- international maps
- radio
- music “what’s that song” identifier
- TV remote
- finance manager
- deal finder
- contact list
- word processor
- spreadsheet
- “loyalty card” stack
- credit/debit card stack
- calculator
- VR & AR entertainment
- game console
- drone controller
- mail management
- catalog shopping
- cookbook
- library (several hundred books)
- and a pile of other things too.
- Oh, and it makes phone calls (audio & video).

For $1/day.

(And that’s not including me writing apps for a living.)

“A phone should two two things well.
Transmit calls and receive calls.”

Those are the two features I use the least.

Thousand dollar iphones. $12 cocktails in fly over country. We are definitely in another economic bubble. It won’t be pretty when it pops.

Your list is a bit short.

Just used mine to track a jog as a combination of stop watch, heart rate monitor and pedometer. All with periodic voice read out.

Try assembling all the stuff in my list as separate items. If you can afford all that, you can afford $12 cocktails. I can’t afford $12 cocktails, so I’ll settle for a “phone” that can do all that stuff (well!) for $1/day.

Yeah, I’ve a total of 350 apps on my phone. Figured I wouldn’t go into _that_ much detail.

I love it because the money funds research that filters around and then I can get a phone that does 95% of what an Iphone can do for 50 bucks. So please line up and buy them.

I’m not doing the Bluetooth headphones thing

Somewhere a pretty, teenage, girl is crying her eyes out because her family won't spring for the "Bluetooth headphones thing!"

Bluetooth headphones are wonderful... Until you forget to charge them, or they are too far away from your device, or when they break down.

If YouTube actually worked with the phone off, I would just keep it in my pocket and use wired earbuds.
