Could It Be ALDS Or Bust For Yankees’ Skipper Joe Girardi?
The Runner Sports ^ | August 9, 2017 | Griffin Fuller

The 2017 season was going to be an interesting one for the New York Yankees no matter how good the team was going to be on paper. With a new roster setup that aimed to be younger, the mindset for many for the Bronx Bombers was a repeat of last season. Perhaps compete for one of the two Wild Card spots but fall short once again. While that would normally mean riots in the streets of New York, Yankees fans seemed to accept that idea. With more organizational depth than many fans could remember, a reboot/rebuild atmosphere around the club was accepted. The interesting thing about this was how this season could affect the jobs of general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi.

Sometimes the players just stop listening to the manager. Sometimes a change is need for change’s sake. That being said, the Yankees are a virtual lock for the postseason and will probably play the Twins in a one-game elimination. Toss up situation at best.

The Yankees will be the #1 Wild Card in the AL and will face the Twins or the Angels in the AL Wild Card Game at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are better than both these teams, although anything can happen in a game. If all Girardi needs for him to keep his job is for the Yankees to advance to the ALDS, he is in good shape.

Toss up for sure as is any 1 game playoff.

However the NYY do have the best bullpen in baseball and power hitters up the kazoo. Biggest issue could be the new guys lack of playoff experience.

I’m surprised this is even a question right now. I would have figured Girardi’s job was safe even if the Yankees had an abysmal season. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for them, and they have really outperformed their expectations all season long.

As a Yankee fan, was never particularly a Girardi fan as the manager. Too
I have of a tinkerer with things. Mattingly will probably be fired by the Marlins this year and look for the Yankees to bring him home finally.

Fire him so the Red Sox can hire him.

True. Former Yankee legend Derek Jeter may want Girardi back in Miami, since Jeter will be co-owning the Miami Marlins in 2018 once the sale is officially complete by the MLB.

I agree with you. The season started off with virtually no expectations for post-season play. The fact that they have done as well as they have is, in large part, due to Joe Girardi’s skills, decisions, and humanity to those players. I would hate to see Joe go, for any reason. It would not be a popular decision for him to be fired, IMHO.

True. Girardi could be with the Yankees for 10+ years. Hal Steinbrenner is not like his father, George “The Boss” Steinbrenner would have fired Girardi by now (1 W.S. championship in 8 years)

Had the Boss still been alive, he would have fired him by now.

The Boss’ children are not like their father.

If the Yankees were so frustrated and foolish to actually fire Girardi, the Mets if they had half a brain should hire him immediately. Neither will happen.

Imagine if Joe Girardi goes to Miami and the Yankees hire Don Mattingly.

George Steinbrenner kept Joe Torre around for a very long time.

Girardi is great at developing talent, but lousy on tactics.

The Yankees’ run differential is greater than any team in either league, except Cleveland. Their winning percentage is 8th. Judging by their offensive and pitching numbers, they should be vying for 100 wins. Not all of this is Girardi’s fault; they can’t find a reliever who succeeds as their closer, despite great numbers by several pitchers. And their offense loves to just pile on.

Why would the Yankees want Mattingly? Having a great eye and glove doesn’t translate into being a great manager.

No matter how bad a team is, they will win one third of their games.

No matter how great a team is, they will lose one third of their games.

Manager just has to figure out how to win most of the remaining third of the games.
