The hijab and abaya have taken centre stage on the New York runway as up-and-coming Indonesian designers kicked off an increasingly diverse fashion week, hoping to change prejudices in the west.
“We’re not oppressed and we just want to show the world that we still can be beautiful and stylish with our hijab on,” said designer Dian Pelangi, 26, who has 4.8 million followers on Instagram.
She was one of five Indonesian designers who presented collections at the show in Chelsea on the first day of fashion week.
Two of the five fell into the category “modest fashion” – in this instance designed specifically for the affluent, modern, religiously observant Muslim woman – and featured models who covered their hair in Islamic style....

Reminds me of a SNL skit years ago where a bunch of butch women paraded on a runway in shapeless, drab one-piece swimsuits during a mythical Russian Fasion show, while an announcer with a thick accent proclaimed “The latest in laydees glorious svimvear.”
You’d think they would show an example of a beautiful hijab to prove it, rather than those things that range from ugly to just plain silly that they use to illustrate the article.

There is nothing beautiful about clothing that identifies a person as a slave.
I don’t watch TV and have only seen the word “hijab” in print, how is it pronounced? “High-jab,””hee-jab,?” I have no idea.
Hijab is a symbol of male domination and female complacency. Just wait until these liberal designers trend their designs to mini skirts with matching hijabs, there will be a run on female sexual mutilation.
