New York Yankees, what a lousy baseball team (vanity)
8/25/17 | Ed01

Posted on 08/24/2017 9:22:39 PM PDT by Eddie01

The New York Yankees are drunk with the power of their metropolis.

Their "attitude" is undeserving.

Tonight, the Detroit Tigers shredded the Yankees in a game with sniper pitches and bench clearing brawls.

Tigers won. Yankees LOST, in so many ways.

BTW: LaGuardia airport is almost as much a shthole as the Yankee manager and team.

No, you hit our catcher in retaliation for him hitting a homerun. Childish. And nobody got ejected, no warnings were issued, yet when the Yankees' pitcher ACCIDENTALLY hit a Tiger in the head (you don't hit a player in the head on purpose. If you're hitting him on purpose, you hit the hip or thigh.), he gets ejected. Baby Cabrera threw the first punch.

You do realize, don’t you, that this Yankees’ team was primarily built from the farm system.

The Tigers are also over the luxury tax threshold (as are the Red Sox and Dodgers.) The Dodgers have the highest payroll in baseball, by a lot.

And if the Yankees are so bad, why are they in position to make the playoffs?

The Nationals are also over the luxury tax threshold with their new bullpen acquisitions.

“You do realize, don’t you, that this Yankees’ team was primarily built from the farm system.”

No, I don’t. They have been packing their farm system with major league level players for this year since early 2015. Here are a few:

Chris Carter,, Ruben Tejada, Nick Swisher, Chris Parmelee, Carlos Corporan, Kirby Yates, Jonathan Diaz, Donovan Solano, Tyler Jones, Vinnie Pestano, Cesar Puello, Sebastian Valle, Richard Bleier, Pete Kozma, and Chris Denorfia, And this is a tack on as they signed 15 international free agents in mid 2015 for the future basically from their school/camp in the Islands.

But their main vision is what they can sign for next year, 2018. The following have been openly discussed in the club’s Bleacher Report, given by a unanimous source within the NY Yankee front office as they are not allowed to openly talk yet.

Three MVPs: Bryce Harper, Josh Donaldson and Andrew McCutchen. One Cy Young: Dallas Keuchel. Chris Carter,, Ruben Tejada, Nick Swisher, Chris Parmelee, Carlos Corporan, Kirby Yates, Jonathan Diaz, Donovan Solano, Tyler Jones, Vinnie Pestano, Cesar Puello, Sebastian Valle, Richard Bleier, Pete Kozma, and Chris Denorfia.

Tack that on to already looking at David Price, Zack Greinke, Jordan Zimmermann, Johnny Cueto, Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Gordon and Chris Davis. These were the cream of the position-player crop. Additional Bats: Manny Machado, A.J. Pollock, Michael Brantley, Dee Gordon, Adam Jones, Nelson Cruz, Hunter Pence and Adrian Gonzalez. Additional Aces: Jose Fernandez, Matt Harvey, Shelby Miller, Garrett Richards, Jose Quintana and Adam Wainwright. Relievers: Craig Kimbrel, Trevor Rosenthal, Zach Britton, Andrew Miller, Jeurys Familia, Kelvin Herrera and David Robertson.

So as you can see, they have not been sitting on their pocket book over the last two seasons and they are prepared to break the bank for next year, all free agent crop. And the sale of YES network is what got them there cash wise along with the residual payments from national networks contracted in 2012.

How many of those guys are in the organization? Not many. How many got to The Bronx. Not many.

http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t531

Of the current Yankees 25-man roster, nine are homegrown: Betances, Severino, Smith, Warren, Romine, Sanchez, Austin, Gardner, and Judge. With Castro’s activation, Tyler Wade, another homegrown player, was just sent down today.

Greg Bird, who will be back from rehab any day, is a homegrown Yankee product.

Ronald Torreyes was acquired in a minor league deal for Rob Segedin, another homegrown player. Chasen Shreve was acquired in a minor-league deal for homegrown Manny Banuelos. Starlin Castro was acquired for a homgrown player and a utility man. Sonny Gray, Aroldis Chapman, Jaime Garcia, Tommy Kahnle, David Robertson (himself a product of the Yankee farm system), Todd Frazier, Didi Gregorius, and Aaron Hicks are all players acquired in trade for homegrown Yankee players.

That gets us to 20 out of 25. Chad Green was acquired (along with Luis Cessa, now back in AAA) for Justin Wilson, who was acquired for homegrown catcher Francisco Cervelli. That’s 21. Chase Headley was acquired for a player the Yankees had signed as a minor-league free agent. That’s 22 of 25.

CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, and Jacoby Ellsbury are the only free-agent signees on the current roster. And Tanaka was a posting-system win from Japan.

Matt Holliday, currently on rehab, was also a free agent signing.

Remember, in the winter of 2015-2016, the Yankees spent exactly $0 on major league free agents. Zero. Zip. Nada. Nothing. And many in the baseball media seemed annoyed at them for it. Then at the trade deadline in 2016, they traded Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran, and Ivan Nova (who was homegrown) away for young players. (Clint Frazier was one of those, coming in the Miller deal.) They followed that up this past winter by dealing away Brian McCann for more young talent. Then they found themselves in contention a year earlier than anticipated.

Because the Yankees (among other teams, including the Dodgers, Red Sox, Tigers, and Nationals) are over the luxury tax threshold, they are looking to cut payroll. So don’t expect them to make a big splash in free agency. They’re trying to get under the cap (and maybe make room for a bid for Shohei Otani.) Signing players such as the ones you’ve named would undermine that. I don’t think they’re after those guys. And I’m not buying some “anonymous source” article in a Yankee blog (especially when most of the Yankee media says just the opposite.)

Breaking the bank is not in the plans. They have reason not to, and they can afford not to.

Sitting on their pocketbooks is the plan, at least for a year or two. Let the kids develop, then get what is needed to go around them. They’re engaging in the delicate balance of trying to contend and retool at the same time, and so far, Cashman is doing a very good job of it.

The rest of teh baseball world will get annoyed at that, but let tehm. The Yankees are in fine shape.

Major League Baseball has handed down the punishments for yesterday’s unpleasantness.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/08/mlb-announces-suspensions-from-tigers-yankees-brawl.html

The league has officially handed down suspensions arising out of yesterday’s fisticuffs between the Tigers and Yankees. Detroit star Miguel Cabrera received the stiffest discipline, with a seven-game ban owing to his “inciting the first bench-clearing incident and fighting.”

Cabrera isn’t the only one who’ll take some games of unpaid leave (pending appeal). Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez got four games for throwing punches in the melee — he was fortunate, perhaps, not to take a harsher punishment — while fellow New York backstop Austin Romine got two for his part in the tangle with Cabrera. That could cause the organization some troubles with filling out its catching situation, though it seems there’ll be some effort to ensure the suspensions aren’t served simultaneously.

In addition to losing their star for some time, the Tigers will go without reliever Alex Wilson for four games because he threw at Todd Frazier after warnings had been issued — and then admitted it (somewhat admirably) after the game. Detroit skipper Brad Ausmus will also sit one out contest due to Wilson’s actions.

All of those players received undisclosed fines. A variety of other participants were levied financial punishment as well. Needless to say, there’ll be plenty of debate over the league’s actions. Tigers righty Michael Fulmer was not suspended despite plunking Sanchez earlier in the game. Likewise, Yankees righty Tommy Kahnle won’t be banned despite throwing behind Cabrera. And fellow New York righty Dellin Betances also avoided punishment though he hit Tigers catcher James McCann in the helmet with a pitch after the initial brawl.

A Major League Baseball roster is a roster of players allowed by league agreement to play for their respective Major League team. There are two types of rosters in general, the “active roster” of 25 players and the “expanded roster” of 40 players.

According to the players you sent in your post, those nine players constitute a lot less than half of the roster. When the roster is expanded to the 40 amount, they will have the 15 free agents I mentioned sitting at different levels in the organization. If only half of them are called up, 8 of the 15, that will mean that the amount of non-home grown players will reach 24 at a minimum. And that still constitutes more than half of the roster at that time.

And if you don’t take into consideration that the club has been taking action to get into the cattle call for the upcoming free agents, then you are missing the actions. For years the Yankees have been sniping players and having to delve out large numbers to get them. Most stayed for a short time. Players like Rodriguez and Teixeira from Texas and Ichiro from Seattle. And they’ll have to make decisions on committed contracts ending this year from former free agents Sabathia, Tanaka, Chapman, Holliday, Sanchez, Severino, Solano, and Choi still in the system. Buying them out is going to cost a mint. But right now, they fill a slot. I mentioned Jon Niece. They signed him as a free agent on February 16 this year, released him on March 26, then re-signed him as a free agent on March 28. Maybe it’s a compulsion?

The Yankees are supporting more than half of their roster according to Rotoworld and your identifications with free agents. They are far from home grown. And if they jump into the feeding frenzy they have set up to do for the free agency crop this year, the amount will get bigger and they will bust the league’s luxury tax and thumb their nose again at the league’s efforts to trying to balance the power to protect the smaller markets. And it all comes down to the media market protection, even to the point of liquidating their own to get there, YES.

You might find it faster to take your cab to the 125th Street Metro North station. Makes the train ride shorter by @ 10 minutes, too.

(If you’re hitting someone on purpose, you don’t hit him in the head.)

Pitchers most certainly have and do throw at a batter's head.

True but the 125th Street station is kind of sketchy that time of night. Also, at Grand Central, the trains are usually sitting there waiting and I can just grab a seat as opposed to standing on the platform waiting.

I went over the 25-man active roster. Those are the guys currently playing. (BTW, Tyler Austin went down and homegrown Greg Bird came off the DL, so the numbers don’t change in that regard.) If you want to break down the 40-man roster, you’ll find an even larger contingent of young players and homegrown players. The Yankees have taken a new direction in the last couple of years. (And Yankee fans love it, BTW.)

Almost none of the players you mention are in the organization. I showed you the link for the AAA Scranton Wilkes Barre roster, as well as that for the 25-man roster. I’ll enclose the link for the 40-man. You can look it up yourself. (But you won’t.)

The Yankees have been very open about their new direction. They have talked repeatedly about getting younger and more athletic (and getting under the luxury tax threshold.) There are reasons they haven’t gone after big free agents, and other than the possible Japanese transfer Shohei Otani, I don’t expect them to go after any major ones. They don’t need to. There is real depth and youth in the organization.

Watch when the rosters expand. The additions will mostly be younger guys, some with a bit of experience. A couple of veterans are on the DL, but they will be the only veterans added.

Sanchez and Severino are homegrown. They have never been in any organization but the Yankees. Ji-man Choi was an emergency pickup to help with a depleted 1B situation. He’s at SWB, and he’s a decent enough player, but nothing special. He was a minor-league free agent after getting released. Any team could have picked him up. Donovan Solano is the kind of veteran depth every team has in its farm system. he hasn’t has any major-league at bats this year, and I don’t expect him to. He’s not even on the 40-man roster. Someone would have to be released (or designated for assignment) to bring him up. Again, every team has a few depth players like that stored in AAA. It protects you from injuries and other situations.

Chapman is under contract for a few more years. Sabathia, Holliday, and Todd Frazier are free agents. I don’t expect them to sing more than two of those. Possibly just one. Tanaka can opt out. Let’s see if he does, and if the Yankees work at re-signing him if he does, or if they “go young” with Chance Adams and/or Jordan Montgomery (both homegrown.) I expect that Sabathia won’t make nearly as much next year as he is making this year — certainly not from the Yankees. Maybe if a team like the Giants is desperate enough.

Jaime Garcia, acquired at the deadline, is also a free agent. A rental player to help the playoff run. Again, something every contender does. (Yu Darvish with the Dodgers is one example.)

I expect that the Yankees won’t be too active in the free agent market, other than trying to retain some of their own. That’s how they’ve behaved the last couple of years, and with outstanding young talent such as Montgomery, Adams, Clint Frazier, Miguel Andujar (homegrown), Gleyber Torres, Tyler Austin (homegrown), Tyler Wade (homegrown), Giovanny Gallegos (homegrown), Ben Heller, Jonathan Holder (homegrown), Bryan Mitchell (homegrown), Jake Cave (homegrown), Billy McKinney, Mason Williams (homegrown), Kyle Higashioka (homegrown), Garrett Cooper, and others, they have the depth on hand to avoid having to go heavily into the market for outside talent. I know this will disappoint the Yankee haters.

I don’t see Niese on any roster, either, BTW, although he could probably contribute. (The Yankees released him on June 7. He apparently has not signed elsewhere.)

They are a very homegrown team which will be getting moreso.

Extremely rarely. If you’re hitting someone on purpose, you do what Alex Wilson did. You drill him in the hip or thigh.

Betances was aiming high and inside. It wound up a little too high and a little too inside. But in a tie game, he’s going to hit someone on purpose? Not likely.

Notice that Wilson, who hit Frazier on purpose, got suspended. Kahnle and Betances did not.

I forgot to mention that Tommy Kahnle is also a product of the Yankees’ system. The lost him in the Rule 5 draft a few years ago to Colorado, who sent him to the White Sox, who traded him back to the Yankees.

Check the listing from this site:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/2016-transactions.shtml

concerning acquisitions since late 2015 till March of this year. You can show me rosters, but please tell me what they did with this many players that had signed into the organization. They were a part of the club. Where are they hidden? And that number really puts a damper on the idea of home grown.
And the Yankees are paying the luxury tax for the 14th straight year according to the AP:
